Buying cheap its not necessarily bad as long as you understand the limitations of the product and have your expectations on par with the price and quality of it.

I bought a Forney 140 flux core welder for $200. I would have preferred a Lincoln of Miller mig welder but they cost 4 of 5 times more money which I didn't have at the moment. The cheap flux core welder will fork for my current projects which do not require structural welds. I don't care about weld splatter at the moment and I don't expect the machine to last me more than a year. Taking that in consideration I can say it was a great buy for me at the moment and don't regret buying a cheap machine. I know I will need to eventually replace it with something better and I'm prepared for it.

I could be wrong. But I feel like the people who post “buy once cry once” with a picture of a really expensive item, are also often times the ones who ask questions to forums rather than doing their own research. I personally LOVE doing research on very specific items to make sure my dollar and needs are met, but a lot of times, people just have money... and they want to blow it on whatever everyone else is doing at that time.

I would consider asking questions on Forums as part of doing research.

    It's "Buy once, cry once."

You should evaluate and understand before spending money.... especially lots of money.

More expensive is rarely the best option. Best option meaning most value. Marketing people actually price things higher so they don't appear to be cheap.

Anyways, it really depends. I have a decent set of tools made mostly of USA Craftsman. They have performed for me 20+ years of weekend work, building engines, fixing suspensions all kinds of stuff. I could have bought the "best" like snap on, but it really wouldn't have done the job appreciably better (except maybe a ratchet, those are more comfortable). I've used and abused those tools and have only broke a few sockets. I probably have maybe $2500 in those tools (boxes, files, wrenches, screw drivers, torque wrenches etc) instead of $25,000. If I did it for a living, I MIGHT want to spend more money. I'll never understand a $10,000-$20,000 tool box though.

Some of my tools are cheap Harborfreight stuff.... like my floor jack, drill press, engine hoist. If I had actually decided to buy the "best" I probably wouldn't be able to justify the purchase.

Sometimes, the "best" is the best choice though. A real pair of Kleins or quality wire strippers can really make a wiring job much easier. My Kleins cut clean right through a bundle of wires instead of having to fight with a cheap pair of pliers. A good file will make your job easier instead of a soft metal cheap file.

Anyways, there are no absolutes. I'm wary of people who insist on buying the "best" or at least the "most expensive" as it tells me that they may not really understand what they are doing as much as someone who thinks that the cheapest is good enough. I'm more interested in what the people who have done it enough have to say.

There is nothing wrong with asking in a forum, especially from people who have practical use of the product. You have to be steer clear of the shit post mine field to find the gems that have value.

It's like a bunch of mods that I see on this site. Sometimes, people just want to spend money.

As far as asking questions on forums, that's kinda what a forum is for.

You are bang on here. I have a couple SnapOn tools (ratchets and screw drivers) and a box, because the Craftsman and Motormaster in Canada doesn't compare in quality, sockets and wrenches are a mixed bag of our chinese made Craftman, Mastercraft (Canadian Tire brand) Signet, and Sun X. They do the job I need and take a beating. I only bought the SnapOn after repeated failure of another brand and it was on sale. My tool box was a 2 year search, and nothing else met my needs.

Depends on what it is I'm buying, but I generally agree with you. If I'm buying something like a cheese grater -- something I don't GAS about -- I'll buy the cheapest grater that works. If I'm buying something that interests me or is safety related I will generally go with the higher quality item that I can grow into, and I know will last longer.

At the end of the day though it has to fit into your budget.

Obviously everyone has their own personal finances, but if upgrading to that additional package or getting the exact color you want allowing you to keep it that much longer and enjoy it then I say go for it. It would bug me to spend countless hours a day and be pumping a monthly payment into a truck that I was so-so on. To each their own though. Everything in moderation even moderation.

Look at Tacoma aftermarket headlights as an example. Prices vary from $495 to $1250 a pair. The expensive pair are DOT compliant, have an LED low/high beam and come with a 5-year warranty. You usually get what you pay for.

I spent 6 hours yesterday researching scope mounts.

I totally nerd out on stuff if it scratches the right itch for me. Thoroughly investigating a 14 dollar discrepancy at work? Couldn't care less.

Who cares? Do you live in a vacuum?

Assuming you have any sort of desire for human connection someday I’ll say you probably could end up with a spouse and kids.

    They probably care.

Lots of guys in here have kids and continue to spend money on farkles because looking cute to all the other boys on a forum is a higher priority to them than teaching their children sound decision making or leaving them with any sort of values or future..

Who cares? Your parents when they’re sick in the hospital or an old home.
Who cares? Your kids when they need help with school.
Who cares? Your spouse when they want to pursue a career jump.
Who cares? How about yourself, 57 years from now, still slaving away to pay off old debts until the day you die. Don’t be stupid. You really should care. Everyone should. Haha. Good luck

I do agree. I’m referring to those posting on FB groups and such with things like “which shocks should I get?” Without giving or having any information on their needs, budget, uses, etc
