There was pretty much zero standardization of ECU functionality before OBDII. These cars don't have a knock sensor, so they don't run active timing maps, basically just runs a preset map based on estimated engine load and RPM. The fuel runs the present fuel map for air mass measured and rpm too until the O2 sensor comes online and trims it, it doesn't remember any of that tho. This was before any significant diagnostics were built in so it can't tell if it has a bad O2 either, so if it goes bad it'll still listen to it and things will run either really lean or really rich.

 

That's a system I'd prefer actually much better control. Cool af

The polar bear population increase is a myth, again I'd check where you source your information from, it seems outdated or a poor source.

It really not the most efficient, but I'd say I makes the best of the tech at the time and runs an engine well for having very few components. 28mpg out of a v6 sports car from the 80s is decent.
