Thank you so much. That’s very helpful. I can speak kilo enough to get by. I’ve been studying on the rule book. 1minute cap after each attempt to declare the next one.
I don’t have a coach. I’ll be handling myself. That would be super helpful though.

You don’t need a coach, just someone who can handle that stuff so you can focus on the lifts. Get a little index card and write down your 4 lift attempt for each lift and give it to them and they can go up to the judges table and put in for you so you don’t have to worry about remembering. I didn’t have a coach at my first meet so my wife did it

cause my goal body was to be shredded and for some reason that’s a mental thing I can’t achieve or deal with the suck and lose the rest of the weight to get to there.

This is a blood ketone meter. Measures ketones in the blood via a finger prick.

    Ketosis is 0.5mmol/L to 3.0mmol/L

So it serves to help gauge where you are at.
I have not been getting the normal signs of ketosis. Like I’ve never gotten the keto flu or any crash in energy (my energy is way up). So I wanted a way to tell where I’m at.

I’m on day 12 of strict keto of <30g carbs per day. I’ve been sub 40g per day for 3 weeks.

Maybe I should add a disclaimer that I’m mostly strict. I have a 1 ounce shot glass I take with me to work and I can have that much beer per day I work. So at least I can try what new brews are being released. I count them as 5g carbs

I was in that exact place about a year and a half ago. I had dropped from 220 to 180 and had stalled out. I couldn't seem to get any leaner. I hired a nutrition coach and went from 180 to 159 at my very leanest. It was an awesome experience, and I'm glad I did it. I learned so much from her about my body and how nutrition works. Mainly, how crazy precise and consistent I had to be to get that lean. I sacrificed a lot. I didn't go out and have fun as much as I wanted because I wanted to be lean more. I carried a pocket scale when I did go out. I weighed and measured EVERYTHING ALWAYS. It was cool to see veins in places you never knew existed. It was fun to look lean. You can do it, if that's still what you want. My point is that you might have to find a way to learn something you don't know now, or sacrifice some things you haven't been willing to sacrifice so far.

It was also extremely mentally draining for me. There are things I enjoy more than how I looked at 159. (Beer, sweets, beer) Overall, I feel the best between 165-175. I have made it up 8lbs to 180 for this comp. I'm a little uncomfy at this weight, but damn I feel strong.

Anyway, I say all that to say this. You can get super lean if you want to bad enough. Just know that it may not make you as happy as you think. As it stands today, your hard work is evident in your current physique. Keep killing it.

Also, major props to these dudes who walk around all cut and veiny all year with a shit ton of muscle on their body. Freaking impressive.

That actually is the position I’m in. I was miserable and getting drained as I kept trying to cut cut cut. It wasn’t fun at all and eventually I want to try again but this break is much needed right now. It’s crazy how easy it is to lose a majority of fat compared to the last bits to get shredded.

Thats another reason for the meter.

My goals are to get my body fat adapted and super skilled at jumping between glycolysis and ketosis. For most people they run strictly on glucose because of their CH2O intake. They may use some ketones at night. But unless a person becomes fat adapted their body always wants to be using glucose.

For an athlete? Not a good deal. Your body (depending on actual LBM of course) can only store about 2,000cals of energy in carbs at a time. Whereas body fat can store >40,000 calories worth of energy at a time.
Why do I not want to access the >40,000 calories worth of energy when I’m training? Especially if we are talking 4-5 hour runs and a potential 10-15 hour race.

Fat adaption is teaching your body to use fat as a fuel source and stop using glucose. For most people this is 8-12 weeks of ketosis.
After that point you can start being more lax with carb intake and your body can much more easily hop back and fourth (like Broke Down explains with his TKD and consuming carbs preworkout).

I would like to take some data to measure where my carbs need to be to maintain ketosis and then start playing around with enjoying a beer here and there or maybe even a serving of rice or potatoes.

I would love to run my ultra100% in ketosis so if I can get to the point where I know a beer or two a week won’t kill my ketosis I’ll be happy to maintain this long term.
Plus I want to prove to the asshole running community its doable despite their cult beliefs thats carbs make the fucking world go round. Even though the fucking world record holder for the fastest 100 mile race is keto!

So strictness for now then lax later. The beer should be back.
