Sounds like it's time for a junkyard engine. Pinging for a long time, low/no compression in one cylinder, using oil... It's not gonna be a cheap fix and it makes no sense to pay $ to pull it apart if you're not doing the work yourself

The money’s not really an issue, I’m in college and my grandpa is paying for it, it’s just going to be so much more complicated for him if it needs a new engine, he’d rather just pay the mechanic and get it done at one place. I’m praying that’s possible hopefully will hear from the mech soon

While almost anything can be fixed, a junkyard engine will be the cheapest route. Call around and find a shop that will install a junkyard engine and warranty it. If there is a fatal problem within the warranty they will replace the engine with a similar one for free. Shops that have established relationships with junkyards will do this with engines and transmissions.

I've actually been looking at this, well not diesel, but just swaps in general, and I find that there is very little info for a 2nd gen.
I'm not trying to be an ass, but do you have any links to some swaps? Best I've come up with is some 1st Gen Taco / VW diesel swaps

I'm seriously interested since I have a high mileage 4banger as well. I figured I need to start prepping for the engine swap now, so its not so much of a big deal down the road.
