    Ive seen this custom intake once before on this site, yet could not find it again. Somebody removed the black plastic intake tube (with damn resonator) over the valve cover. They replaced it with aluminum intake tubing. This tubing also had vacumm hose fittings. I was wondering if this gives a descent increase in sound? i want that.:D And if anyone can direct me to what tube and accessories I might be able to buy without replacing stock airbox. From what Ive heard, expensive KnN intakes arent worth it. I would rather just replace a resonator. Im looking for decibels mostly.

    BUT...I want to avoid replacing the resonator in the fender well in case of water damage via sucking it in.

    Advanced or Autozone near me dont carry these in stock so I want to be sure it will fit before I order it

    I know exactly what your talking about. The air plenum switched for a piece of tubing. If you are expecting any gains then forget about this idea. I used to have this done to my old 98 avalon. All it will do is make more noise in the cab.
    You do actually loose performance by increasing the air velocity in the intake. What happens is you are giving cylinders a different air/fuel ratio in each cylinder. I have seen the EGT readings on my old avalon and cylinders 1-6 all had different readings. 1-2 and 5-6 had a leaner mixture than 3-4 the EGT climbed almost 200 degrees in 1-2 and almost 300 degrees in 5-6.

    Be careful doing specific mods since they will affect the engines longevity and performance.

    thanks for the rsponse. Ive been told that a velocity stack would correct this though. I understand how they work on inline 4 sport bikes. taller stacks on two of the carbs. But of coarse I only have one throttle body. Would I have to restrict the airflow in the throttle body slightly to correct this? Would I still here it louder?

    It will not correct the increase in air velocity. Also restricting the throttle body would create a number of performance issues such as poor fuel economy, loss of power and even a rich fuel/air mix.

    My recommendation to you if your looking for intake noise then just buy a cold air intake or short ram intake kit.

    So it did not work on your avalon...have you tried it on the taco? My guess would be the air distribution between our 4 cylinders and the 98 v6 you had might be different.

    you say that increasing intake velocity decreases performance...then why do superchargers and turbo chargers work so well in increasing performance. Do they not essentially increase the intake velocity? Both of them push more air into the cylinder by means of pressure.

    um i think its volume not pressure per se. More air not the speed. the engine makes a vacuum and the turbo just places more air there when the engine sucks it in.

    Well in order to get more air into a given area that will get closed by the valve you need to push, pressurize to move the air quicker no? Wouldnt increased volume be a result of pressurized air moving quicker into a given container (with the aid of vacuum)?

    Pressure has nothing to do with speed. I can pump air into my bicycles tire as slow as i want but the pressure will go up. The engine is using air as a fuel to ignite the gas. more air more Volume. But you where refering to "velocity" which is speed. Engine creates the velocity vis vacuum. Superchargers and turbos use velocity in order to keep up with the engines demands. 5000 RPM requires a lot of air so you get the air fast. 500 RPM uses less air so slower velocity. Nothing to do with power though. It's no big deal though. I worked on jet engines for 8 years, but that doesn't mean I know everything.

    Stock intake system has resonators in place and the piping might be little smaller than optimal size in order to minimize noise and maximize low end torque. Since most people will drive this truck in the 2-4k rpm range.

    Replacing the intake resonator with 3" diameter pipe, will NOT hurt the motor. It's like putting an aftermarket intake on any 4banger. The question is, will it yield any gains? Most likely no and if you are lucky, you will get 1-3whp, which you won't notice and its not worth your effort.

    If you want real performance out of your truck, the best bang for your buck is 75shot wet NOS system. You can get used wet kit for $300-$500...

    If you don't want to go forced induction route, drop in K&N filter, in the stock airbox and replace the most restrictive parts of your exhaust system with straight pipe ;)

    I spent the better portion of my 20's wasting my money on aftermarket intakes and mufflers. The most gains that I ever saw was the ability to run the engine up to a higher RPM. Absolutely useless for the type of driving I was doing. Instead all I got was noise right at 65-70 MPH. And one big headache from hearing it for more than 10 minutes. Now, I spend my time just maintaining my vehicles to keep them dependable. I'm getting old I guess? LOL

    No your are correct! The gains from intake/header/exhaust on modern fuel injected 4 cylinder are very minimal, we are talking 5-15whp! Unless you have k20z3 high revving Honda motor which can gain a lot from I/H/E/Hondata... The most you gain is noise and most likely you will loose LOW end torque, which our trucks need!

    I have highly modified four bangers four last few years, N/A & turbo. All I am doing to my truck is drop in aFe filter and leaving it stock performance wise.
