my wife does a marinade lets it soak over night, basically about 1/4 cup of olive oil, 1/4 lemon juice, couple tsps of minced garlic, 1/4 chopped onion, tsp salt&Pepper, splash of liquid smoke. Mix well in ziplock bag and ensure it all covers/coats the meat. turn a couple times, and pan fry or Ive grilled the steaks out on the propane grill to your desired done-ness...

Trust me, deer don't normally get that big here in my neck of the woods. You have to drive to south Alabama to kill the Boone and Crockett bucks. My brother-in-law killed a 178" deer in a club 40 miles south of Montgomery and that's a common sized deer for that area. It must be the water and all the pecan orchards down there.

there is usually a couple of 150 ers killed around bankhead every year... but these are definitely exceptions and not the rules... anything grossing over 120" is a dang good deer to most people in alabama

I've seen some monsters killed out of Black Warrior! Some bigguns killed out of Sam R Murphy as well. Here are 2 of my trophies from bowhunting, typical Alabama deer that most folks see. Nowhere near the size of the monster buck I killed with my 45-70.

Typical Alabama deer! If you hunt Choccolocco, you'll notice that the bucks there have white, skinny, little, smooth, pencil horns. Down south, the horns are more bumpy, darker in color and the bases of the horns are much thicker. I guess it must be the different breeds of white tail we have here.

Any kill with a bow, is a trophy to me. It's so much more difficult to shoot deer with a bow. Makes me feel like I'm cheating when I'm gun hunting sometimes! lol

yeah back in the 60's the brought deer from Michigan down and released them in some of the national forests (bankhead for sure) and those south alabama deer were native and out of florida and south georgia i suppose and have just migrated up north little by little; most of the deer up here where i hunt are michigan and you can tell especially early season if a MI and AL deer come out together because the MI deer are much darker furred early on; a bama deer will still look red next to a MI deer most of the season... MI deer usually rut in early december here and the bama deer are usually a month behind... i suppose they have to interbread from time to time though... especially if there are does that are bread in early dec that cycle again in late december

My dream hunt would be to make out west one day and stick a nice bull Elk with my bow. Milk River, MO area specifically. I'd also like to gun hunt the elusive chocolate-horned deer of Tecomate Ranch!
