@Itchyfeet I am disappointed here and expected better from you....

I thought over-landing was for the ex-bus boy who was fucking the Applebees 3rd shift manager, Karen, and now got a raise to serve Buffalo chicken bites on busy Wednesday nights. Now, Tristan who lives rent free with Karen, has some coin from all the tips and wants to take Karen on "adventure." So blows his 3 month pay on a RTT and and a drone so he can take epic IG pics and videos of Karen. This way her ex husband, Kurt, the district manager who knocked her up feels like shit as he is flipping through IG on another lonely night with overweight Becky the dishwasher. This means Kurt does not overland, cause child support is steep and Becky cannot climb into a RTT.

Now, up your game or I'm going back to work :smack:

But...but...how will I know my own self worth if I don't get at LEAST 50 likes on my #overland#camping#girlsweekend#blessed IG post??
For real though. I remember when you could look up the "#camping" and actually get ideas and great pics of locations, rather than a pair of legs sticking out the back of a van strung with twinkle lights, with no less than 6 'outdoors' companies tagged.

FAIL There is no 3rd shift at Applebee's

Today is the day that Josh decides to buy a house with Rachel. It's white trash nacho budget so he's returning his truck to stock. In the end for Josh it becomes a partial wash, because people like to low ball and offer up weed. Welcome to California it's going to have to be an FHA loan with fucking PMI, but Rachel is so punch drunk on HGTV that the $2k they scraped together on a Tacoma part out / return to stock isn't even going to be enough money to buy a house in Temecula, so it's the dreaded H word. Ahh fuck we're going to have to move to Hemet and commute. So they move into a "cute and cozy" little fixer upper off Florida Ave complete with dead grass and dying palm trees. The cute, cozy and fixer upper part well that's realtor speak for dump with a failing foundation and a driveway that looks like Dresden in 1945. In the end Josh ends up getting two jobs because the payment is eating them alive. The extent of the renovations, well the grass is now green and the palms are growing into the power lines. Are the Washington or Mexican palms? Well the easy way to tell is the trunk girth? Like Mexican built Tacomas, Mexican palms are often viewed as inferior and not bespoke enough. It doesn't matter Rachel is in a full blown depression and her asshole is rotting out from IBS. Is it the stress of a dream delayed who knows. Her biggest home improvement was changing out the toilet for a new Kohler Wellworth comfort height, painting the bathroom sage green and some new towel and tissue holders. She now knows more than Josh about toilet rough in specs and is eager to learn, but what she didn't plan for for how far that elongated bowl sticks into the room. She bought the good angle stops by the why, the BrassCraft ball valve style and braided hoses. In the mean time Josh's Tacoma has bald tires on stock wheels, because he had to sell those Methods and Wildhills 285/75/16 if you're asking. This will be as far as they'll ever get into their home renovations. The struggle is real and they'll keep it up for about 5 years, but Hemet is just too eew and Rachel's Civic is getting tired from all the commuting.

The economy will slow, gas prices will rise and it will be the perfect time to sell their first house together. They won't be moving up the property ladder. Instead Rachel's mom who is an accountant will have crunched the numbers and it will be cheaper for them to rent an apartment close to Murrieta. Cue Steve Winwood's Back in the High Life Again. There will be a small windfall in terms of profit and Josh in his new found hood rich will be a 3rd gen Pro and a new side by side. The first weekend out he'll break his collar bone and two ribs at Borrego Springs and have to be transported by ambulance. Rachel told him those things were dangerous. It will be at that moment when the hospital bills start rolling in that the Pro goes up for sale with only 2600 miles. He's returned to zero and ends up getting Rachel's hand me down 1997 Civic EX coupe. It's a miracle that car has survived staying stock between all her boyfriends in college and all the thieving bastards. Rachel has bought her dog mom car a 2010 Subaru Forrester with a case of oil in the trunk. It don't matter doh. It looks good at Trader Joe's and her commute is short and sweat like the smell of coolant.

To me, offroading is when you run trails as a day trip or from a base camp, overlanding is when you explore and camp in the backcountry via unpaved roads that can be anywhere from tame and non-technical to seriously technical. I have a rooftop tent because I sleep better in it, and seeing as I camp 50+ nights a year a better night of sleep is beyond worth it, and I leave it on even though my Taco's my daily because it sits behind the cab on a low bed rack and makes little if any handling or fuel economy impact.

As an avid overlander, I describe overlanding as backpacking except with a 4x4. Some backpackers thru-hike the Pacific Crest or Appalachian Trail, some are out every single weekend they can tackling the steepest, longest toughest trails they can find, some are just out a every so often on a short trip when it's nice out and everything in between. They're all still backpackers. Then there's the guy who wears an Arc'teryx jacket, Danner boots and an expensive ultralight backpack to the office every day but only actually goes backpacking like maybe once or twice a year and takes enough pictures on it for a year's worth of weekly Instagram posts. This guy is not a backpacker. Same thing goes for overlanding. The guy with a built, pinstriped and trail worn Tacoma(or 4Runner or Jeep or whatever) with a well loved RTT is an overlander, the guy with a Subaru Outback on all-terrains who's out exploring forest roads most weekends is also an overlander, the guy with a RTT/Rotopax-clad and extensively built Tacoma with rock sliders that have never touched a rock and nary a pinstripe or trail scar in sight is not an overlander.

The Crossfit of TW is the people asking what lift has the best combo of looks and on-road driving dynamics or how to add raptor lights to a TRD-Pro grille. I'll give the people doing functional overland builds the benefit of the doubt and assume they'll actually use it, even if they sometimes won't. At least they're building something with function in mind instead of looks.

the kind who's put 60,000 miles on his 2018 Tacoma, 30% of which are DD duties and 70% of which are adventures and an additional 20,000 miles in the same time on his Range Rover Classic that's purely a wheeler and adventure toy. I'll take a picture of my pinstripes when I'm outside if you don't believe me, they speak for themselves.
