same, but I think that's too far forward. this pic shows the circle after the oil drain opening, which should be what your manual pic is referring to. me thinks that directly under the xmember as the bolts on the side are almost directly in line

 

found two more pics that may show position better, and @Timmah! pointed out it's on the cross member holding the steering rack

 

First thing that comes to mind when seeing this, is how in the heck do people drain the ATF thinking it's the engine oil lol. Its so far back from the engine

 

because they don't read and assume since it's connected to the engine that they can drain it. also the oil drain plug is tucked up in there if you don't actually go looking for it

 

I always thought the engine one was easy to spot..the ones that always elude me are the front diff plugs. For some reason every time I get under it I have to look around for a minute to find the damn things.

Anyway, not to derail the thread...

 

To avoid, bending the rear skid, I just remove it. It's only 4 12mm bolts and it's off. In the pic, it does look like somebody jacked up the rig without removing the rear skid based off the dents I see unless they hit something 4wheeling.

 

I used to worry, but stopped caring and just kept the rear plate on lol.

yeah the pic is from the internets, definitely looks like a good couple of rock scrapes. at least they used to right

 

Thanks everyone for the replies, I'll remember this for future reference. It seems every time I look under my truck while working on it, I find another fix that needs done. Currently my list includes today's lower ball joints and tie rods, the rear breather fix, and now I see that my steering rack bushings need replacing. Now I know why everyone shows the magic mastercard for new members when they join TW. But on a positive note, when I'm done, it will be ready for years of driving pleasure.

 

Does anybody use the stock front skid plate to jack up? We were rotating tires and my father-in-law just positioned the jack right under the skid plate and used it to jack up the whole front end.

Not really...I mean it's not the end of the world as long as he placed the jack under the cross member, but the stock skid plate is thin as a tin can and will bend/dent really easily. It comes off with just a few bolts and a few minutes of time

 

Thanks @eon_blue - good to know. he must’ve placed it under the cross bar as the skid plate didn’t seem to deform. Won’t make it a practice though.

 

@CrippledOldMan, i am needing to do some frame mod maintenance on my truck and am trying to figure out the best spot to place this floorjack so that it will be safely out of my area and give a little bit of lift (just to the front) to get my neck underneath for a fair amount of hours during this week while the weather is supposed to be warmish for primer.

The area i need to get at is from where this jack currently is at in the pic to right behind the front wheel (mudflap already removed out of the way)
I don't need to take the wheel off at this point in time but how the jack is now I am lifting up both the front and rear on the driver side and I ONLY need the front up
where is a better spot I can put this safely
i don't want to raise it up from the LCA if at all possible!

the diagram on the prior page puts the best spots Right In My Way!

 

@GQ7227 Jay, take a look at post #11. If you remove the skid plates, there's a cross member directly under the engine and transmission. After getting feedback from others here on TW, that the place I used to jack up the front end and get both tires off the ground. I then placed jack stands on the side frame rails just behind the front wheels. had no problems at all. Hope this helps

 

If you only need the front up then you need to lift it via the front cross member as noted on the diagram I posted on page one. Chock the rear wheels, lift via the cross member, and put jack stands on both sides of the frame behind the front wheels.

The diagram shows 2 jacking points and 6 jack stand points. Where you have your floor jack in the pic is not mentioned on that diagram as a jacking point.

If you jack it up via the front cross member and put jack stands right behind the front wheels you can easily access that spot you need to access. You have to remove the skid plate to jack up via the front cross member

 

guys, he literally says the jacks would be "in his way" if done by the diagram

@GQ7227 you can put a jack stand under the front section of the frame rail "ahead" of the wheel. I would suggest taking the wheel off anyway and setting it under the truck somewhere.

It's fine if you are only doing one side as the strain is still on the suspension at three(3) points.

 

@frizzman , I stand corrected, It's nice to know that some of us (You) actually pay attention the the words that others post here asking questions. Your also correct in that placing the jack stands under the front frame rails would keep them out of his way.

 

These things are a joy to jack up, lol especially if lifted at all...
