Have the same set up. You cannot power the main box from the generator, without throwing a physical lockout bar that blocks the mains from being turned on. Works every time.

That's how I'm going to do mine. My electrical service runs into a disconnect before my panel so it shouldn't be too bad to take care of. I was planning on putting in a sub panel with utilities in it to wire in the transfer switch to, but since I can disable mains and work on the incoming of my 200a panel it's going to be much easier.

We live .5 miles from a hospital. We rarely ever lose power and when we do it’s 20-30 minutes or less. Neighbors another mile away aren’t so lucky.

We lose power when a fly farts. Surprisingly, we didn’t lose it in the last storm. I check my Genny, and run it once a month.

Just throwing that out there for safety. Some people do think they are electricians. Just ask @Redmann.

PP&L gets really touchy about backup generators. They had a bunch of people killed during, I think, the blizzard of 93 from people backfeeding the lines with their generators.

I still don't trust the auto-relays. Physical disconnect or bust.

That's the way to do it imo.

Working on anything electrical is way easier when everything in the panel is dead. Doesn't cost much in the grand scheme of things either.

Most people are shocked when they learn I'm not a very good electrician. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Just kidding. I'm fairly decent.
