To answer your question, OP.

The truck in stock form can do plenty for you, if you are only planning “over landing” and not any rock crawling, while not splurging (budget), id do the following:

Bilstein 5100s front and rear (if you wanna splurge a little, then do 6112/5160s, they are quite an upgrade over the 5100s and won’t need the OME 877s).
OME 887 front springs
AAL (rear)
285/75/16 Falken Wild peak A/T tires
1.25” Spidertrax Wheel spacers
Front skid plate
Sliders
Alignment that pushes caster as far positive as possible (while maintaining camber and toe witching factory spec).

you will need to trim a slight bit into the front fender and might get away with no cmc. If you have to cmc, no big deal, easy enough to do.

the above will take you ANYWHERE you wanna go, short of serious rock crawling.

I hear you. My first impression was the same. Once I saw them in real life, they blew me away. DAT FUNCTION DOE!!!

 

OP, here is an honest list to get you started. I have similar goals to you.

Absolute Needs:

1-New shocks.
The stock Offroad shocks are too light duty if you add any weight or cargo. You’ll be all wallowy and smacking your bump stops when they fade out on a rough road. Replace them with something better. Avoid the temptation to spend all your money on Kings or something else designed for desert racing that you don’t need. I find Billstein 5100s work great and they are relatively inexpensive. New shocks is a must!

2-Rear spring helper:
You need an add-a-leaf, or air bags, or a new leaf pack if you add any weight or carry cargo in these trucks. The stock springs are only good for driving around town with an empty bed.

Nice-to-haves:

1-New Tires.
The stock tires are pretty good, but you may benefit from something with a more durable carcass and more tread. I would avoid going to 33”s as they rob the truck of torque and power, and kill your fuel economy. Stick with a 6-ply (c-rated) or SL rated all terrain that is 1 size up. No more.

2-A better skid plate.
The stock OR skid plate is weak.

Everything else is either personal choice or fashion. What a lot of people don’t get, is that if they took all the money they spent on high-end mods they don’t need, and put that money into fuel and more time off work, they’d have some amazing travels and memories rather than a depreciating truck owned by the bank.

Travel money before mod money, always.

 

Our suggestions are almost identical.

I got rid of my 33s (C load AT) a while back and replaced them with more aggressive 34 (E load MT).

I’ve had 31, 32, 33 and now 34s.

Its been a bit of a “pain” to make them fit and did sacrifice a bit of get up and go, but still have plenty of power and truck still feels great. I believe once I have it all button’d down, it will be worth the sacrifice (for me).

 

Get yourself some 265/75/16 Duratracs. The Goodyear tire, Toyota should have put on an Off-Road Taco, not those stupid Kevlar "Highway Tires".

I want to put a rooftop tent over the bed. Thinking about a hard tonneau cover like this one so I can install a racking system. I don't want the tent above the cab.

 

Tonneau cover is a must for any pickup

Get some diode dynamic LED headlamps, they’re brighter and cheaper than the OEM

 

Lift, tires, Prinsu cab rack Mobtown sliders and a Southern Style front bumper. Done!

 

All the mods. You will find more and more and then... more even to replace the ones you’ve already done

 

For the tonnaue cover, you'll probably want a Tailgate Seal like this one.

 

And then moved it to the taillights

 

The LED headlight option is going to run owners more like $1400 if they want to upgrade down the road. Plus 2-hours of your labor. Plus the cost of a conversion harness when it becomes available. The factory $485 LED headlight option is a bargain.

Honestly, keep it stock, go on some off-road jaunts - and see what mods /you/ need for /your/ style of offroading.

These trucks are very capable in stock form. I did Fins & Things at Moab and Engineer Pass bone stock -including the goodyear kevlars. Did i bottom out a lot? Yes. Did it make it? Also yes

After those experiences i opted to get rock sliders, and after blowing out my rear shocks on Mojave Road i got new shocks and lifted it. But that’s what /i/ needed. Your experience may vary
