ALL gens have had edge cases with the same outcome.

I've taken a 3rd gen on the same trails that I've taken 2nd gens, first gens, and Hilux and seen no oil starvation. These are hills that would be difficult if not impossible to back down with only brakes (without flipping the truck). If you're into airing (and gearing) down to make the Tacoma climb walls, it would be easy enough to design a pan for that. 2nd gen oil starvation stories are no more/ less plentiful and there are guys on TW that have machined CNC oil pans that are works of art. As I'm sure you're aware, these specialty pans increase risk of sludge in the sump and would probably require additional care to prevent a whole other type of potential oil starvation.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/custom-oil-pan.180215/

I'd love to hear @BigMike weigh in on this one. Not sure if you've seen the stuff he does with Toyota trucks. If there's a systemic issue with the pan (or something else), I think his truck would've gone boom a long time ago.

There are plenty of videos of 3rd gens smoking on hills. But I don't recall seeing a good explanation of why it happens.

Thinking the same thing, which is why I pinged @BigMike. He weighed in over a year ago, and never saw another update. I agree with him that the smoke I've seen in the videos does not look like oil. I wonder if he's given it any more thought. There has got to be a very logical explanation.

BigMike’s Big Journey: New 2016 Tacoma

Fellow greybeards will remember the issues with the Toyota 3.0 (Three Point Slow). I bought a '91 Hilux brand new and after ~135K miles, my motor smoked like this for about 10 seconds and then went boom. Head gasket split and hydrolocked the motor causing MAJOR carnage. My truck sat at a dealership for several months along with dozens of other pickups and 4-runners. Back in those days, the 3.0 was used cross platform.. Toyota accepted responsibility for a manufacturing defect and I got a new longblock, pistons, rods and head! I drove the truck for another 150K miles.

Geez. An "awful lot" and "many" are not numbers. They are musings, nothing more. It's pretty incredible that for as many Tacomas sold (close to a million 3rd gens so far) that you don't read pages and pages of problems here. Because everyone knows the only reason people post is to bitch about something.

My God Chris. They sell 25K a month. They have the highest resale. They are the top vehicle to trade for another Tacoma. The numbers don't lie.

Or are you as much an expert on donkeys as you are on 3rd gens...lol

I would never beat a Donkey like I beat on my truck. It's a vicious cycle, I can't wait till my truck dies so I can buy another one. Probably will be a new 3rd gen also.

Donkeys, they group together just like Tacoma's in a parking lot.

Burning oil is pretty distinct, so I agree it might be something else.

Part of me wonders if there is just water in the air box that's sloshing down the intake, but then the air filter would be wet.
