Alot of the suburban streets here have a speed limit of 35/40. So usually im crusing at 40 and if i stay exactly at 40MPH my truck refuses to shift up into 5th! I have to get to about 43MPH before it will shift up. So if im cruising at 45MPH, and i need to only slightly slow down to 40 my truck will shift back into 4th. and this cycle continues on and onnnn.

I hate automatic. I wanted the 6-speed manual so much.

Is there a TSB for this? or some fix...

dude mine does the same thing and it pisses me off! I usually wind up getting frustrated and putting the hammer down and then it shifts.

The transmission TSB is only for a hard downshift into first gear - it won't fix this issue. I am not aware of a fix, but a number of people around here just put the truck in 4th for city driving instead of drive.

Yeah 5th at 40 seems to be the wrong gear anyway. I don't think you'd want to drive the manual in 5th at 40 either. Too high of a gear for such a slow speed.

I drive my manual in 5th at 40 unless I'm going uphill. 5th is a 1:1 gear on the 6 speeds, so its ok, doesn't lug the engine at all. Anything lower than 40 and I'm shifting lower though.

    ^^^ this ,

I have the same issue when cruising the country roads where I live , the speed I usually travel at is just at the point between 4th and 5th . I just knock it down to 4th when it is hunting between gears and put it back up to 5th when I am on a faster portion of road .

Mines does that but i get rough shift. I wouldn't mind it too much if it shifted smoothly

    40mph and 1100RPM?

My 6-speed would probably be in 4th or 5th and at 2,000rpm. Not sure how much worse on gas it would be, but it makes the exhaust sound a whole lot louder and gives way quicker acceleration.

Autos are so boring. Launch, shifts into second at like 5mph, shifts into overdrive at like anything over 20. Sounds weird with a loud muffler.

I can definitely tell you how fast I'm going without looking at the speedometer just by the feel of the drive. I never really thought much about it because my last car, '95 civic would downshift a lot harder. So to me this felt like an upgrade, that is until I started reading more about it on here. lol

But IIRC the transmission tsb reflash had more to do with speeds around 20 mph and the smoothness of it downshifting from 2nd to 1st. I don't experience any issues with that part. For the folks that have had the trans tsb reflash, did this also fix the 5th to 4th downshift at 40mph?

While I agree is itsn't the best manual, it certainly isn't that bad. Now that I've driven it for a while, its gotten smoother, and I've adjusted to it. Yours must have been operator error. :D

it's shifting between lock-up and unlocked. I keep it from doing that by giving it less throttle while in lock-up mode for acceleration...

FYI, at higher speed, it will go out of lock up at 91-92% load (by scangaugeII), so I use that gauge to stay locked up while accelerating. Also, will downshift at approx 100% load.

The way your truck is currently behaving can't be good for fuel economy either.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to drop a line and update you guys on whats happening with toyota. First mistake was to have a joint venture with GM at its Nummi plant in California. Quality has been slowly going down hill since its inception. I guess thats why they closed the plant after years of subpar trucks. Next, I've owned several tacoma 4x4 trucks and by far this is the worse one yet. I've always bragged about toyota because of my previous trucks.

Complaints: Truck can't find a happy gear between 35-40mph, has a rumble in the transmission when slowing at about 20mph, down shifts hard when going down hill, motor is soooo loud i cant believe they own Lexus. Seats are a joke.

You want a smooth truck motor, go with nissan frontier and it has more horsepower to boot. Nissan trucks just looks ugly, part of the reason why i chose Toyota. If you really think about it, consumer guide was giving Toyota "Recommeded" status based on previous stats from the prior models. Thats why they had to take some of the models off due to consumer complaints. I leased a 2007 F-150 4x4 extended cab for two years and if Toyota doesn't watch its quality, I'll be talking to you boys on Fords F-150 forum.

Screw Auto. Anyone who can't get used to driving the 6-speed just need to buy a Crown Victoria.

Any car company that makes you pay 20 000$ for a new transmission after the driver used the car for it's purpose is shit. Looking at you GT-R.

Not honoring the warranty because you used launch control in your 100k sport car is like not honoring the warranty on a F-350 after the transmission broke towing 20 000 pounds. Screw Nissan and their french penny pinching owners.

Um, this is and the mushy brake pedal are the only two problems i have with this truck. I dont have any other problems with shifting. Im happy with the tacoma, and honestly in my opinon the Nissan only has more power because it is heavier. Having 236~HP in a truck thats heavier than the tacoma would kill that truck. OH and the Frontier doesnt have ATRAC either.

IMO, the Tacoma has a wonderful power to weight ratio, while the frontier not so much...

Meh, its only when im in the city and using the back roads. oh well. its only a small inconvenience, i could just learn to live with it lol
