I mentioned earlier in the thread that I wanted drawers, but after some research I used small Ammo boxes to save some $ and get some storage.

Did you have any issues with this setup or with the height? Did you do anything special or just space them out evenly and bolt them on? Im looking at going this rout, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So wife and I are really looking at RTTs, other than height, any reason to not just mount the tent to our shell or over the cab?

Height is one (which is really a both a center of gravity and wind resistance issue as I'm sure you're aware).

The other is support. You need something that can support the dynamic (moving + wind resistance force) of the tent. A lot of roof racks and toppers aren't up to that (though they are generally fine with the static load - i.e. you and the wife climbing up and sleeping in the tent).

Those are really the only two things to keep in mind with any mounting strategy - bed rack (these are the best, I am biased), roof rack, or topper.

Ah yeah that makes sense. That leaves me in a bit of a quandary. We would be using the RTT for some of our scuba trips to defer the cost of lodging. However we store our tanks upright in the bed, call it 28” to account for the storage thing they are in. Not sure some of these bed racks would accommodate that height. Also a bit of a concern about theft (currently stuff in the shell, is more or less secure). Lots to think about. Thanks for the info.

Front Runner? Got any part numbers? Been leaning towards running one as a bed rack also

I do not, as I no longer have my Tacoma. But CBI has designed these really well. They extended the overhang, (from the 2nd gen and 3rd gens) and then there were these brackets that you would essentially clamp them to the inside of the bed caps. I was skeptical at first, but they never budged. And when I took them out, you never knew that they were there. If you're interested in getting them, just reach out to @CBI Offroad Fab, they're awesome guys, and can explain it better!
