Same here. Hoping this thread will notify me of BF deals. 255/85 guys have been seeing minimal mpg difference correct?

I've combed through this thread pretty extensively, and the majority it seems have opted for 255's vice 285's. I've been pretty hard set on getting KO2s for a while but after doing more research the performance of ST's seem to outweigh the BFG's in most categories. For the Coopers specifically why do most people opt for the 255's? I'm currently running a 2.5" King lift, have 5.29s waiting at my house, and issues with me going one way or the other? Would it be purely a looks thing? From what i have read both perform off-road and on-road relatively similar. I do spend time at Glamis a couple times a year and hit up the occassional trail in SoCal. THanks.

Picked up a set of 5 255/85/16s from Discount Tire with certs for $1500.

Does that sound like a fair price?

255 vs 285 in my opinion comes down to a couple different factors. The 255 is lighter and narrower so it’s possible you will get better MPGs and not feel the weight of the tire as much. Also rubbing issues are minimal or non existent with the 255. Sometimes they are also just a little taller then the 285. A couple down sides to the 255. If you plan to drive through some larger rock obstacles, cosmetic rim damage can/will happen. I have to air down to feel like I can do sand. The 285s are a great choice as well. They are more common and have more choices for a variety of budgets. Will more than likely need a CMC. They offer wider contact patch at the consequence of weight. So slightly less MPGs and feeling of loss of power. In my opinion they look better then the 255s. Although the st Maxx is probably the best looking 255 compared to BFG KM2. The st Maxx just appears wider than the KM2 making it a better looking tire. There is a thread called the skinny on skinny tires where wide vs narrow gets bashed over and over to the end of time

I’ve gone back and forth between the two tires as well. I like the fact that 255’s fit the truck better with minimal rubbing and clearance issues. What size wheel width are you planning to run? One thing I’ve heard was that for an 8” width rim the tire balloons a bit. Also what offset? For me I’m going with a bit of an aggressive negative offset so I just don’t think the “skinnies” will look right or perform the way I want for my wheel choice. I’ll be going 285/75/16 Cooper ST Maxx. Next is deciding between 4.88 / 5.29 gears.

I have TRD PRO Sema wheels that are a 7" rim and +4 offset and 4.5in backspace, they came with the truck. I went ahead and ordered the 5.29s for future weight and bigger tires, and i have heard the gears actually perform great stock. Look forward to seeing pictures when you get those tires!

This is my second set of 255/85/16 Copper ST Maxxs. First set lasted about 55,000 miles and still had good tread but I got new wheels and couldn't resist putting new rubber on. I used them mainly on road with light off road use (logging roads mud/snow). With this being my DD the Cooper 255/85/16 are perfect for what I need, light weight, little to no rubbing, minable road noise, great traction for hitting the dirt roads and finding great camping spots (I'm not going to be rock crawling in Moab anytime soon).
-Icon Stage 4 with UCA's in the front (2.5 in)
-Bilstein 5100/B110 with Dakar medium leaf pack in the rear
-SCS Ray 10 wheels offset -12mm no spacers
Did the Timbren rear U-bolt flip system with off-road bumpstops and carrier bearing drop to accommodate the dakars and extended travel struts. Been rolling this set up for about a week now and I have no complaints. Would I like bigger tires? Does the pope shit in the woods! Of course I would, but I'm waiting until it's paid off and isn't my DD then Chop Chop bigger tires, armor and the great outdoors!
