What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Yeah, could be a couple spots too. In the past if I've reused the radiator hoses I've had to make sure the clamps and hose were put back in the exact spot they were before to avoid getting drips or dampness. Might be something to check, that's all.
Also might just need to be snugged up on the nuts/bolts for the thermostat housing. If you haven't tried that, you prolly have, just throwing it out there

 

Took out my Kings today to go back to 5100s....temporarily



Getting the Kings rebuilt and revalved this week. If I'm being honest...the 5100s/881s handle the street considerably more smoothly than my Kings do. Hopefully the revalve helps.

probably because stock king spring is 600lb and 881s is 550lb I think.

I have 550s on my ADS. I need to swap in my 5100 and 881s to test out the street ride.

 

881s are 500# which makes even more sense yeah, whenever I finally get a front bumper it'll help even more with the kings 600# springs. But talking to the guy doing my rebuild a revalving should help too. Offroad they do great of course once they heat up but on the street they are pretty damn rough lol.

 

you might want to ask about a flutter stack or a progressive compression curve. I’m no expert but I want to run the lightest spring I possibly can and let the shock do the work. I’m also planning on smaller lighter tires and going slightly lower in lift to help the street ride. Or maybe I’ll just sell my coilovers in favor of the 5100s.

Go take them offroad and you'll quickly see the difference.

Hopefully you are getting flutter stacks. Either way the more you tune for offroad with just a single shock the more likely it won't be as friendly all around.

 

Oh yeah I remember how bad the 5100s were offroad, wheeled them for about a year and got tired of always being the one guy in the group a 1/2 mile behind everyone else because my suspension wasn't up to the task. That was what prompted me to get my Kings, but at ~30k miles they're due for a rebuild.

Wasn't aware of the flutter stacks, I'll be sure to bring it up with the guy that's rebuilding them. He's done a lot of suspension work for local guys on here so I'm sure he'll know about it.

 

Only problem with the daily mod is that I REALLY like driving the Tacoma. I've got a 2004 Ram and my 2015 KTM Super Duke R motorcycle yet I drive the Tacoma most of the time. Maybe I need to sell the Ram and get another Tacoma...

Getting the timing belt and water pump replaced today. Might be some other issues that come up when they are in there, as well. My new-to-me 2003 Tacoma SR5 4WD V-6 has 246,000 miles on it and has no record of the timing belt being replaced by the previous owner, who had it for 11 years. There is a bit of oil on the engine so hopefully the timing belt will take care of that. If they find something cracked, then I'll just need to take a deep breath and go with it!
