I used to live off Augusta Road.

It's not very far from you.
There's a trail up to the top on the left side of the pictures.

Yeah, a granite monolith like El Capitan.
Not nearly as big but damn impressive in real life.

What's the term? Pluton, I think.
A volcanic intrusion that didn't make it all the way to the surface.
Then over eons, the overlaying material eroded away.

 

Pluton is correct. I would be interested to know if the erosion was due to glaciers or glacier runoff.

I shouldn't think glaciers. It's pretty far south.

The Appalachians are very ancient, even on a geologic scale.
Perhaps just erosion?

Hmm. I don't remember, but I have the notion that most of the glaciers that covered NA were west of the Appalachians and east of the Rockies.

Tell you, what, I'd be a bit leery of being on the top in a cloud or fog.
You come to the end of the trail and come out of the trees and the rock slopes downwards.
Steeper and steeper.
Before long it's vertical cliffs.
