Anyone here have a 2020 Off-Road that can speak to whether or not it comes with internal navigation or not? I know they have car-play, so you can connect whatever maps you use on your phone, but someone told me you have to pay extra for the "maps" button to actually work on the dash without a phone.

    Anyone have any info?

That would suck if true. Having satellite navigation is way better than depending on cellular service maps. I really don’t see the purpose of CarPlay other than encouraging even more distracted driving..

I have the 20 and maps does work. I think if you ask for turn by turn instructions via their service, there is a subscription. Dash maps are free.

Carplay is good if you have things you like to listen to from your phone while driving, like an Audible account for audio books, or listen to a podcast. It actually makes it easier to do that, because you don't have to mess with your phone at all, it just puts a simplified version of it on the truck's screen.

Good to know, thanks very much for the reply. Didn't seem right that you would have to pay extra for a feature that every other car seems to come with as a standard.

You have the choice to use Apple Carplay mapping or the standard Entune 3.0 mapping with no device as you could on previous year models.

I just got the 2020 OR Tacoma and it has a host of connectivity features but from all I can read the maps are free, it is the other services that cost after a year of trial except the Remote Connect which I believe is a 10 year trial.

I personally never use the built-in nav or radio.. all I need is a screen that has carplay, rest is just not used.

Still don’t understand why you need CarPlay to do those things. Any audio you play on your phone will play through the trucks speakers via Bluetooth. Music, audiobooks, YouTube, podcasts, etc all work just fine with Entune. I guess CP just makes it easier to switch between apps while driving but again, I think people should be at a full stop before messing around with any of that..

I use it because Apple Maps and Google maps are both 100x better than the crappy entune navigation.

How is Apple maps 100x better? It may be harder to drop a pin in a random place but you can use coordinates and Entune will get you to any location from anywhere. Satnav > cellular dependent navigation IMO

How do you get the onboard nav activated? Nothing there unless I plug in for carplay?

Just press the Map button on the head unit.

It says “The Navigation App is not installed. Please check the Toyota website for compatible applications.”

I would go back to your dealer. Mine worked perfect sitting on the dealer lot with the shipping protectors still on it.

It all depends on what (radio) option/package, you get. Toyota offers integrated gps, and connective gps. Connective needs to be linked with your phone/mobile service

    Canada Eh!
He probably means better in the sense that it is much more up to date for things like traffic conditions and detours. Apple and/or google maps is typically running in the background of millions of people phones and uploads all that info to better plot a course through a busy city etc.

This is a $40k TRD Sport with XM and 8” touch screen...not the base radio on the cheaper trucks. Dealer doesn’t know anything about it...just the Carplay or Android maps

It's still an option, to get integrated, vs connective GPS. It usually states on window sticker if it integrated, or connective.

Well believe it or not, your cell phone also uses satellites for navigation, so that's a wash. It also has the latest, most up to date maps. Your head unit only has whatever maps were available when they loaded them on the map card. Your cell phone also has much better traffic information. And you can cache maps on the phone for when you are out of cellular range. The few times I used my trucks built in navigation it didn't even have several major roads that had been built in the last few years. So how is "satnav > cellular based navigation"?
