What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Tried that and didn’t help much.

 

Weird you're experiencing it with the Alcans, usually a quality leaf spring pack isn't as susceptible to the binding that leads to axle wrap as the stock leafs are.

What's also interesting is that I've never once had it on my 04, but my 99 had it bad.

 

My thought was if the brakes aren’t slowing the wheels down the rear axle would have a greater force toward the front of the truck and the front brakes would have to do all the work taking some of the load off the rear axle too. Makes it easier for axle wrap to occur?

 

yeah I’m surprised too. They are custom made for my truck too, the weight of the truck plus 600lbs. So they are pretty stiff.

Axle wrap generally happens from torque of the axle. If the brakes weren't working they wouldn't be applying torque to the axle like if they were. Generally axle wrap happens during acceleration. Are you experiencing it when you stop or when you go?

It's fine. Mine twist all the time.

 

Axle wrap occurs from braking. Weak springs allow the axle to torque during braking. The jerk felt is when the stored energy in the bound up (torqued springs is released. This is especially true in autos where the brake is held when stopped then released when the light changes. I am not saying it can't occur during acceleration but it is far more likely and common for it to happen during braking.

Having said all that, I find it very unlikely that the classic axle wrap symptoms are occurring with newish alcan springs. Especially custom ones designed for extra weight.

have you greased the slip joint? that can cause alot of weird axle wrap issues...

 

Me right now when all my buddies are going camping and the trucks ripped apart.

 

I'm starting to think the same, get a 2wd for my daily. Either a 5 lug or a pre-runner maybe. I still want an extended cab tho and it needs to be a 3.4 with a 5 speed too.

how many miles do you have on it?
i have a small squeak but has ALWAYS pretty much been there, the first few years it really annoyed me being a nearly new truck and all and had it lubed up a few times at the major service points upon request of squeaky clutch pedal
i don't have any noticeable popping or anything like that as of yet

 

I need to do this on my truck. Still has the original spring in there as well. Not popping but I've looked up there and can see where it's slowly wearing away at the metal bracket, elongating it.

 

if its not one thing its another anymore on these old Tacomas lol
at least you probably don't have the problems i've got going on

It’s not that hard of a job to do and will need to be done sooner or later

 

Mine is 20 years old and coming up on 325k miles so it's not really that surprising.
