Shellshock's DIY inflator / deflator

Glad to help out! It's a pretty simple build and way cheaper and better quality than the ones you can buy. Mine gets a lot of use and people who dont have one, buy one after seeing mine in action

 

oddly i've been struggling with the chucks suggested, so i'm considering these for a better closed solution. have you had any minor issues like Shellshock mentioned or are yours still nice? just checking again before purchase. thank you.

 

struggling with the ones I used? thats the first time I've heard that, everyone seems to love them. Is there not enough space or something with your rims?

the ones jberry suggested are the ones I started out with. they worked well but after a while they started to lose grip on the valve stems because they only grip in one spot instead of 3 like the others.

 

I’ve seen them not work on some valve stems. You have to get extenders for your plugs or take off the valve stem covers completely. Ones that secure the valve stem won’t work

 

the included ones clip right on nice & tight but are open so works against the kit. the ones you suggested (color connex) i can't get to lock on... i'm sure it's me but i messed with them a couple times and just went back to the open ones, which of course make this not work right.

 

I have a few of those presta to schrader slip on fittings you always see on the bike shop counters around here. Helped reseat a few beads at various trailheads. People look at you like you're a fuggin wizard when you whip an air hose out of the toolbox and tell them to throw it up on your rack.

 

I thought that I had a couple of those in the garage. Couldn't find them in my bicycle stuff but did see that pump sitting in the corner. I can pop that chuck back on the hand pump in no time if needed for traveling.


A week ago a friend and I had an epic time trying to mount some ATV tires. No need for bead locks on those MF'ers. We about gave up on breaking the beads when we tried carefully backing over just the tire section with his Chevy 2500 to get them off the beads. Spooning was negative fun on those tiny wheels. And, seating the beads was a pain on the fronts also. Thankfully, @Shellshock 's air chucks clamped on the stem with no core and a ratchet strap was the only way to get them to start seating. Came close to getting out the butane.


We had a great time laughing at any rate.

 

Parking a truck bumper over a tire and using a hilift to press down on the bead works well too.

 

Good idea for next time. My neighbor has a hilift. We got nowhere with my usual ghetto method:

The color connex ones are for connections between hoses, not for the valve stems. They won’t lock onto a valve stem. they are the standard connection so should hook up to any hose unless you have the high flow connectors. I had other hoses I needed ends for (and a compressor) so I bought this big kit of connectors so I could inter connect things however I needed.

They are closed valve so no air should come out. Pull the ring back then press on and push the ring forward.

 

i'm mistaken, i didn't use the connex bits for the chuck. i used the ones in your kit that you linked there. i may not have pushed them on enough before locking. i'll play with them and see.

 

I have seen high flow connectors but have no idea what they would be good for garage use? Maybe a very high torque impact?

For tires IMO, the limit will either be the tire stem, core in or out, or the inflator depending on the particular valve design.

 

Those are almost effortless on the Taco and our Subaru. I am even surprised by the tiny amount of air leakage when removing. Like @Shellshock said, be sure the ring is pulled back to attach.

Although, the Mazda has very short exposed threads on the stems. I have to use a traditional chuck:

 

Same. I have nearly zero loss when taking them off. When I put them on I basically just hold it by the ring and slide it right on all in one motion. Reverse when I take it off.

I’ve run into a couple rims that requires a little more work to clamp it on because of the width of the coupler but once you’ve done it once it’s no biggie.

 

Same here. Is is silly to say that they save time, but they just do.

They are close to the rim on my front motorcycle wheel and the Mazda but don't make contact. If I had a better idea about how the TPMS stems on the Mazda are seated, I might put a half turn on the nut, but it isn't worth messing them up.

I was laughing when hitting those ATV wheels with just the chuck on the bare hose. It was just like at the tire shop. Also, thinking back to my first few tries seating beads with a freaking hand pump in the summer.

My apologies for the less than perfect pics. This is a unit that I made and have modified over the last 30 years. Works very well but is a bit cumbersome. I generally use it when using my CO2 tank......

It looks like it. I have a lot of the parts and it wouldn't be hard to gather the rest of the stuff.
Did you use the Flexzilla hose?
