Back to the erosion conversation:

The most common erosion is caused by water. The freeze and expansion of water causes cracks that erode. Once oxygen mixes with acids either in the water or with materials inside the rock the erosion speeds up.

As for the top levels of of soil being eroded, wind will remove much of it, however the streams and rivers carried much of it.


Side note/fun fact: almost all of the sand on the east coast came from the top of the Appalachian mountains.
