A lot of people go off the MFD readout. Since it’s gotten cold mine reads 15-18 but calculated I’m 19-20 mpg

during the summer it’s usually within .5 mpg but currently it’s all over the place.

There are a few 2.0 options for stock gearing. You might want to try one of those tunes. I’m on B04, so maybe somebody on the same ECU version as you can chime in with their suggestion. My preference on B04 is any 2.0 with a functional ECT because with ECT on, the shift points are closer to where I like them. I get better MPG by quickly getting up to speed and then coasting. That slow acceleration crap will tank your MPG.

I find that performance tunes have pretty damn good MPG. I was on the latest 2.0 GEAR LOCK before I backed up to one with ECT. On the latest performance gear lock 2.0 I was getting 22 mpg at 4500’ elevation. Double cab long bed 4x4 with a tool box and plenty of grades.

Or you can wait until SOON when Mat releases the next batch of goodies.

If you have 4.88’s I highly recommend the 0944 beta. If not, just roll with the newest

It’s the build number associated with the particular 2.0 file that @SpeySquatch is referring to. You are on stock gears, so just go with the newest to start with.

I’m glad to hear about the towing mode! Are there any changes to the torque converter to keep transmission temps down?

How you drive and where you drive makes a big difference too. although I find that if I try to 'baby' it I get lower MPG's that if I just DRIVE it. But just driving it to me doesn't mean always getting on it and screeching to a stop. Just drive 'normal'.

I did a full transmission flush, fill, check recently and began to watch transmission pan and converter temps with my SG II. Whether by design or not these transmissions (Auto) seem to operate in a range btwn 190 and 200. IMO that is too hot. I now have my tow package equipped cooler pinned. It runs about 30 degrees cooler even when towing. Not for everyone but will be my norm from now on. JMO.

Is just fine. It’s a fully synthetic oil. It can handle that temp very easily. Big rigs run down the road all day long with their transmission temp hitting 225 for hours on end and even getting up to 250 when pulling a hill on conventional oil no less and last for many hundreds of thousands of miles.

So you just stuck a paperclip or equivalent in the thermostat hole underneath and kept it there?

went to Ace Hardware and got the ?? 0.062" clip (HD and Lowes did not have in single purchase amount) for about a buck $ and yes placed it in the thermostat hole. Figure if fill measure temp is 98-115 and temps above 190 cause measurable damage to AFT it would be better to pin as the cooler thermostat opens at 190.

EDIT: Hope those who only want this thread to be on-topic don't get BUTT HURT by this post. If you do... move on.

I used bailing wire on mine. Easily replaceable. But I’m not in rust country.

Sure it is...but do some research on what happens to AFT at constant running temps above 200 as related to longevity, performance and protection and you will find heat is always the enemy. Your Life Time fluid will degrade quicker at higher temps. So why not just do all you can to ensure the temps are kept to a minimum? Even more so important if you tow. Do a search on Transmission Fluid Operating Temps here on TW and see what you find - none of it will say Big Rig - but it will be applicable to TW members. I did my F&F at 40K and it showed signs of temp wear - ATF oem color of cherry red was light brown and that was your life time Toyota WS AFT. My advice is don't take a chance. The DIY method is easy and significantly less than the Mother Ship will screw you for when they do the service or when they replace your transmission.

I watch mine via OBDFusion, which I imagine measures line temp and it also stays 190-200 and is almost always within 5 degrees of the water temp. Last trip out to Moab when I hit the Utah line and used more skinny pedal than I normally do, I saw it break into the 215 range. I was NOT a fan.

I NEED to come get with you and do a flush on mine. And from the sound of it, pin my extra cooler.
