I was. I've never had a range turn me away. I know where an outdoor range is. Not interested in going to it. I have a hunting club. I shoot there usually. Just didn't want to drive an hour to fire 5 rounds. Also, the outdoor range is 45 mins away.

Bottom line, it's his range, his liability insurance and his rules.

I suggest you go somewhere that is setup properly for various calibers and wants your business.

    YMMV

I did and do go to places that want and take my business all the time. I didn't know what I was walking into as it was my first time. I'm not going back, trust me.

The more I think about it the more I truly believe AR was the bad word for the day.

All I know is that there is a 6.8 barrel for the TC Contender, but the .270 requires jumping up to the brawnier Encore.

I believe Ruger also made a Mini-14 chambered for 6.8 for a short while, and the Mini platform maxes out with the 7.62x39 Mini-30.

He probably wasn’t familiar with the round and didn’t want to risk some hot-rod round tearing up his range. Still, though, 6.8 isn’t exactly some obscure wildcat. I figured it was pretty well-known amongst gun guys.

Might have been a brass issue as well- a lot of ranges want to keep everyone's brass and don't want odd lots that look similar mixed in. Who knows though since they didn't actually give you a reason.

I used Hornady's 120gr SST last year and shot three deer- two dropped where they stood and one took a single step forward before dropping.

They're hammers for sure. One of the only rounds I shoot through it.

That's ridiculous, it's like the owner doesn't know a thing about rounds. I would have been pissed too, especially because you were just running up there to check something really fast.

Closest range I have near me is a Public DNR ran range, even they will let you shoot any round you want other that shotgun shells (unless it's a slug). They have some kinda lame rules, but it's a public range so I get it.

Eventually I plan to buy my own property and make my own range so I don't have to be restricted all the time.

Yeah there is a really nice 100 yard outdoor WMA range about 15 miles before our hunting club (which is an hour away) that I need to use more often. The only reason I gave the place a shot is because it was so close to the house. It's sad because it is a really neat little place. It's almost like an old country store built into it. Oh well, I refuse to give my money to Fudds.

I'd feel the same way. An hour would sure be long drive to shoot.

The DNR range I pretty much use only for bow and bolt gun. It's a great range really, super clean, has an awesome lounge, meeting place for hosting talks and instruction, and clean modern restrooms. and believe it or not the range officers are a pretty group of guys that enjoy seeing an AR or AK as much as an old lever action 300 Savage.

That's awesome. We also have some other really nice ranges here. They all allow suppressors and SBRs also. That's important to me because I have both and like to tweak on them from time to time.

We don't shoot rifles at our hunting club during deer or turkey season so it leaves me trying to find a place to shoot at least 6-7 months out of the year.

I was worried about that when I went to the DNR range because I had a "brace" on my 9mm AR, but they didn't say a thing and I've also seen many people use suppressors there.

Is your hunting club right were you all hunt I'm assuming?

Yeah it's a hundred acre pine tree refuge my buddy's family owns. Beautiful property. Tons of turkey and deer.

I'm sticking with the range owner or whoever is in charge they have a reason it is their choice you have to play by their rules. I live with in 2 miles of a state owned range the target area faces me so yes it's loud. Now here is the reason the state closed the range it was totally out of control and it was open without supervision not only fully automatic weapons they drug things in like old washing machines to shoot full of holes and at point they saw no real reason to drag it back home. The range tin roof was full of bullet holes this is what happens when no one is looking. The State received well over 100 complaints from the neighbors noise, trash etc. This area is back woods Maine so 100 complains was as good as 10,000. Eventually the state reopened the range with a big sign if you are caught in the range unsupervised you're going to jail. It is now staffed by a range officer during certain hours so here is a perfect example of people abusing the range and the problems it causes so if you can not play by the rules those in charge have every right to refuse your privileges.

I’d ask when the owner would be there an go back on a day you’re not shooting and it is not busy, and chat face to face with the owner. Might simply be they don’t sell the rounds or the counter guy is trained to not make decisions. As a neighbor you likely can get permission with a little honey.
