Trade in for Taco, or keep 2 vehicles?

I was just in a similar situation, my wife had a 2007 Hyundai santa fe with 80,000 miles. Wanted to get her something with AWD for the Minnesota weather, so we ended up with a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Ultimate AWD. They were only going to give us 2,000 for trade on the old one, so I kept it and figured I could drive that into the ground on my daily commute and save the miles on the Tacoma.

It's kind of fun having a weekend truck, and it lets me do more things to it than I would have if it was my daily driver (better tires for camping/hunting/snow, roof rack, removed the front air dam, potential suspension changes that would not have happened otherwise).

Third option: toss a backpacking bike onto your Crosstrek and use it when the terrain gets too challenging. Keep the Subaru.

You just bought the Crosstrek and lifted it. I’d use it and save the cash or pay off your debts or save for rainy days/a home/a family/etc.

You had me at manual transmission. AWD is nice in the CO snow conditions but it sounds like you are trying to get off the beaten path which at some point you would be limited by the Crosstrek. You could compromise and get something used or a discounted 2019 so the cost impact isn't as big. Side note, with Subaru still offered the MT on the Legacy and Outback.

As someone on TW said, you can only drive one vehicle at a time.

Totally. Having a second DD would allow for a lot more mods and save wear and tear from dailying the truck. It is hard to say if I'll mod it that much though, if its my daily. a lot to think about really. I think if I get a new truck, Ill keep it stock for as long as I can suspension wise and all to see its capablities since I'm not doing crazy tracks. Thanks for the feedback. It makes sense to keep the subie but feels excessive. I guess after winter I'll have a better idea of where I want to go...

I dont mtn bike haha, I do hike though. I don't have the time to get into another hobby. The idea of having the truck to drive more places appeals to me. Especially for photography when I need to get to a challenging location quickly that I wouldn't be able to while hiking. Plus I want to eventually add a camper to the taco and travela round in it in the off season.

Yes, my subaru is AT now and I regret having it. I've overheated it once while off roading while I got stuck going up this small rut. Truck would've easily made it but I wasn't trying to screw my bumper. Didn't damage the tranny but it shows that the subie is only so capable and easily can get overworked with mild off roading.
I want a MT so badly and enjoyed test driving the new 20's with their updated engine tune!

This is another consideration for me. I think that when I get the truck, I'll only want to put my time and energy towards experiencing it. Not switching between two vehicles all the time. And if I do go on a road trip to do photography, I'll want the truck anyways to haul all of my gear and dog and camping stuff and then I'll want to be able to drive off road to remote areas. So I won't take the subaru because of the limitations, I'd only take it for the MPGs if I did. Basically the only downside of the taco to me is the fuel efficiency.

Selling the crosstrek I could use that money for gas.

Love my tacoma in MT and honestly would probably be driving something else if that wasn't and option (I know gasp from TW). It much more engaging and responsive and just plain fun. Also, as you know manuals are a dying breed so you have to get while the getting is good and enjoy it while you can!

What part of Colorado are you living in?

I agree. I had a MT nissan juke, it got totaled and I got an subaru STI. Loved that car so much. Sold it to go travel a few places.
Got back and bought a crosstrek after thinking it would be a perfect fit for my lifestyle and it is a great fit. But after moving to CO and doing a little bit of off roading, I am wanting a real vehicle! lol. Plus I am over the AT. I want to put it in gear and be able to pass people going up mountains....crosstrek has no power up at 10k feet.

I am in SW CO, basically in the prime areas for 4x4ing! It's pretty endless out here and I am excited to work my way up to the harder trails in the future.

I’d get the Tacoma sell the subie private party and use that money half for truck mods to your liking and other half for a house purchase down payment.

Not a bad idea. I do want to start looking to build a house when I turn 30.

Smart, trucks come and go as a depreciating purchase. The house is a great investment I mean any automobile is cool and all but your home imho is so much more meaningful.

I agree, having a home will be awesome. But I am young and need to make sure I want to liv ein this area for a while before deciding on a house. So that is at least a couple years down the road.

One thing about selling the subaru privately is that I will pay higher taxes when purchasing the taco. Instead of saving on the taxes via trade in. I think private sale and trade in loss would be comparable.

Sounds like you answered your own question on what to do. I live in an area with crazy traffic and there has not been one day where I regretted getting the manual.

For sure. I just wanted to get feedback from others and think it through some more! I appreciate all of the advice from everyone.
Luckily where I live there is one light and I drive through it once a week to get groceries, otherwise its all highway and minimal traffic. MT will be so much fun! Guess its time to wait through winter. If i can.

Unless you cant live without the 2020 updates the 2019 will be super discounted but inventory options will start to decrease. Man you could probably find a 2019 Pro for the same price at the 2020 Offroad you were talking about depending on how decked out you planned on getting it.

I've been back and forth between a 19 and 20 but keep coming back to wanting what the 20 offers. I want the Multi terrain Camera system, upgrade speakers, etc. Especially so I'm happy and don;t feel the need to upgrade for the next 10 years. I'll keep looking throughout the winter and see if I can get any killer deals, but I think I am set on a 20. I thought there would be more 19's after people start trading them in for 20s? But you're right the pro could be had for similar pricing.
The thing about the pro that holds me back is the suspension. Doesn't the fox shocks have to be rebuilt every 50k?
Is this the same for the OR? If I'm dailying the truck, I don't want to have to worry about rebuilding suspension yearly. That would then make me want to keep the subaru.
