I have 2017 SR5 double cab that didn't have Sirius radio. I bought a replacement radio that had Sirius module attached and ordered a new section of antenna harness cable that has the double connectors(one for am/fm and one for Sirius module). When all was installed the am/fm works great but when I select "Sat Radio" from radio, I get a flashing "Check Antenna" on the screen. Do I need a different shark fin antenna or what else could be the problem? Thanks, Roger

Did you purchase and install an antenna(not just the cables)?

I connected the new harness section directly to factory antenna wire on the right A pillar under grab handle trim. It's now connected directly to the factory shark fin antenna. I assume the factory shark fin has am/fm and sirius reception capability. Could there be a factory shark fin with sirius and one without it?

    Yes

The SR is not equipped for XM. You will need to install an XM antenna. It doesn't have to go in the shark fin.

Really doesn’t matter. My experience with XM has been terrible. Even after a year of credit following a a year of discounted service I have removed my sat receiver. Problems with reception and they compress the audio tracks so much that even on a clear day it doesn’t sound as good as radio. Old tech that is going obsolete. I wouldn’t waste money getting it working, you likely won’t keep it going for long. To get rid of the icon unplug or remove the receiver.

Thanks, I was trying to avoid using an additional external antenna thats why I bought the new section of antenna harness. I was advised that an aftermarket Sirius antenna needs to be mounted on the outside of the vehicle to get good reception. All indications were that the factory shark fin on my SR is capable of Sirius reception.

I haven't had that bad of experience with XM. Admittedly, it isn't perfect. But it sure beats the OTA stations that I currently have available. I have 2 subcripts (me and wife). My better half always gets the charges lowered at every renewal.

Very few SR's come with XM. Only if someone had it added from the dealer. I've seen some installers mount the antenna directly behind the HU under the dash. But I don't know the results. You could mount the antenna on top of the dash, behind the rearview mirror, or some other location inside the cab. But best location is outside.

Tonka, I've had very good Sirius reception on previous cars and truck all using factory sirius equiped radios. Rather than buy a sirius aftermarket receiver, I sprung for a Toyota factory radio with sirius installed( there are two different factory radios, one sirius "ready" and the other incapable of ever receiving sirius). My SR5 now is sirius ready with sirius module installed, all I need now is a good antenna. I was hoping someone had tried the same swap and could tell me how to get rid of the "check antenna" problem.

They have spent at least 50 hours trying to keep or retrieve me as a customer. I eventually blocked their number. Indicative of a failing service.
OP, note they will most definitely give you free service, credits and lower rates...when your time comes to complain.

Best of luck, truly. Check the shark fin, I bet it’s in there. Cable may not be, but that’s an15 minute job.

Sorry, I thought you said you have a 2017 SR. But now the SR5's do have the antenna already installed.

PS: you can get rid of the message by plugging in an antenna.

We get advanced notices well ahead of the end-of-subscription. I don't know why though. I'd sure hate to be on the other end of that conversation with my wife on the phone. :crapstorm:

Did you have a type-O? Just FYI - You can still see your original post in my quote.

They did not enjoy my final “conversation”. At one point when I was stupidly paying full price, they had me work with an “engineer”...within about 3 minutes it was suspect he had little more than a script to read by, did not understand terms such as interference or wavelength. His boss was capable of asking me to reboot and refresh (about the, I kid not, 50th time I was asked to do so. I actually put this on Toyota’s shoulders too. Clear XM is failing with their diminishing satellite footprint and Toyota should not participate. I’m sorry I purchased an upgraded sound system and have after getting it completely replaced under warranty given up on it ever being any good. While on my 7th Toyota, it is this kind of balderdash that drives customers elsewhere, and don’t think my kids, the Gen4 potentials aren’t noticing the music doesn’t work.

I do have the SR5 sorry and I connected the new antenna section directly to the factory antenna wire coming from the shark fin. The antenna wire has a plug connector on the right a pillar and the new harness snapped right in place. I guess I either drop headliner and check connections or get magnetic aftermarket antenna. I 'm going to have enough $ in this to justify getting a TRD instead. Thanks everyone!!!

OK - First thing to check - Did the original HU have XM? You can tell by looking at the OE HU - it will have a separate box mounted under the receiver.
If it does - you don't have an antenna problem.
If it doesn't - then you don't have an antenna.

Just wondering how you listen to music? I like being able to keep up with new music. And I can't afford to stream music on my phone.
