Back up Camera Relocate

Typical question, I added a swing out tailgate and need to relocate the backup camera.

Has anyone used the SSO kit? This seems like the easiest solution.

My other idea was to source an aftermarket camera to use so that my oem tailgate can retain it's harness and camera if . I haven't really done research on what camera would be best to use with the factory headunit.

Any suggestions?

I made a small bracket for the swingout to attach my camera and just extended the wiring harness a couple feet. It was actually much easier than you'd think. Just make sure to make a solid connection with the splices and you're good.

 

So the above kit extends the factory harness to use where the center cap goes? I actually like that idea.

 

Correct. I thought it was pretty slick, you'll just be off center with your camera a bit when reversing

 

Yea, I heard I need to make sure my solders are good when messing with video cable or the video quality will crap out.

 

I just used crimp connectors and heat shrink. No drop in video quality. Soldering would definitely be a better option though, I just didn't feel like taking the time. These are not your standard video cables though, they're just your basic electrical wire. No fancy sheathing around the cable or anything.

I saw that, but for the price of the SSO kit it was hard to justify. I'm not sure where I would weld that to be a good viewing angle. I don't have a bumper, just a swing out tailgate.

I ordered the SSO kit and hopefully it comes this week and I'll install this weekend. I'll report back!

Not a bad kit. I haven't soldered the extension in yet to actually use it, but I got everything mounted.

You definitely want to check your spare mount and ensure its hollow in the center. The camera and clip extend backwards about an inch so I had to widen the hole to make it fit. I had to sacrifice a drill bit and a few beers.



My buddy was also proud of his handy work with a dremmel. He hollowed out the center ring to make it a bit more clean looking. Not sure if it will interfere with visibility untill I get the wire extended and soldered.

 

I went in and adjusted the camera angle, took a few more photos of the kit.

It's not a bad little kit, even though it comes with way more materials than I needed. I probably have 10ft of video cable left and various pieces that are needed for the Lexus installation. It serves it's function so I'm happy with it. The biggest PITA was widening the center hole on the spare mount so that the camera clip and wire would feed through. I also sanded down the edges of the camera clip so that it had less of a diameter.

 

So is it plug and play? My camera is already on the lower swingarm of my Wilco Hitchgate. I want to move it there like you have. Can I just unclip the camera from it's oem harness and use the longer cable provided to move it to where yours is now

 

Negative, you need to break out the soldering gun. I cut my oem harness (they are like $20 online if you are worried) and soldered in an extension by using the supplied video cable in the kit. It comes with a generic 4pin connector, I just cut them off and through them in my electronics bin.
