OTD infers everything including taxes as in what it takes to own the vehicle - what's the tax rate in a given state, is there a trade for which there's a tax credit, what's the dealer doc fee? The point is, the price people need to solicit IS WHAT PEOPLE PAID ONLY FOR THE ACTUAL TRUCK. They are trying to determine a good deal when negotiating - is that @ invoice? $100 over invoice? Whatever the case, you need to negotiate the PRICE OF THE TRUCK. No DMV fees, no dealer paperwork fees, no trades and so forth which are wildy variable factors that contribute to an 'OTD' price. Exhibit A:

My truck's MSRP: $38250, My truck's selling price $36,100. This is ALL you need to figure out what types of deals people are getting on 2020's. You can now calculuate that I paid 5% under MSRP if you choose to do the math. Why would anyone want to factor in my state's tax rate is 6.35%? Do you care that my dealer's paperwork fees are $499? Do you care that I had a trade which lowered my applicable taxes to almost nothing?

BOTTOM LINE - OTD IS THE WRONG TERMINOLOGY AND CAUSES CONFUSION. ITS 'WHAT WAS THE MSRP OF YOUR TRUCK VS WHAT YOU PAID FOR YOUR TRUCK' Forget everything else. /rant

100% agree. People that only post their OTD price are not helping at all.
That's why I posted my build sheet with the prices of all options shown, the MSRP and my agreed to purchasing price.

Sorry if this has been mentioned already, but I also think that once you add a trade-in into the equation, it can be a factor on the new vehicle price as well. Example, if they "gave you less" on a trade, they could discount the new car more than if they were to give you more on a trade, and less of a "discount" on the new vehicle.

I would say one difference to me is this:

    Dealer a. $36,543 + 199 fee
    Dealer b. $35,963 + 1199 of bogus fees

Which guy got the better deal when its the same msrp truck?

I found this site today and the little chart on it is great.

    https://www.autocheatsheet.com/

Then about half way down is a link to another site that has a chart that might help a lot of people like me understand more about the buying process

    https://www.autocheatsheet.com/new-car/what-new-car-dealer-fees-should-you-pay.html

I was curious about the $300 dealer processing fee listed at the bottom of the dealership site in fine print that is not part of the MSRP. I also learned reading this that the "Delivery" is something they charged by vehicle size, and not value. Then I learned that you will be taxed on incentives if it's possible. I knew about the taxed on the difference between the trade value subtracted from the new car value. That is how it is here. Other states don't have to do that.

So I'm working with a young salesman and I flat out told him, only give me the final OTD price. My excuse is so that I can run the numbers myself using various finance percentages. Since this guy is a son a friend it will allow me to cut him some slack. I'm replacing a totaled Tacoma and believe in Karma. If I go full bore on this guy with my 12% - 15% off or nothing tactic I will miss a great deal and lose a friend. And yes, there are dealers out there that will succumb. They are far and few between but they exist. You just have to ask yourself, how much effort am I willing to put into this. My golden rule for car buying is that basically, every $1k dollars equals $20 dollars a month. I am not going to lose a friend for what would equate to $960 bucks over a 4 year period. Especially since when I am done with a salesperson they are glad to get rid of me. I have already sent this guy about 7 or 8 stock numbers to first make sure he can even get the truck transferred if he doesn't have one like it there. Then, I've already changed my mind 4 times on color. Right now I am back at a 2019 Pro in Voodoo with the desert air package, door sill and all weather mats and the Predator steps, with a "listed" out the door price of around $47,250. That's before my down payment. I want to hear his best offer first. He doesn't know it yet but I want him to knock at least another $2k off that. Then I will tell them I will pay the tax outright to keep it off the loan, then drop another $5k on the down payment. Which should bring the total loan amount to under $40k.

$40k will put me just about where I was on my 17' sport before it was totaled and still have a little mod money in my pocket. Need some sliders at least.

Very true, which best advice is to negotiate purchase price and then the trade, less trade tax credit, to truly know what you got the vehicle.

Sounds like a legitimate question. :notsure:

He'll wind up with a shit load of wrong answers but I would never fault a guy for asking a question.

Ok Rob what do you think about Deez .
:devil: Luv Ya Brother Hope you are doing much better. Really can't add any input because i bought my 2017 TRD OR 4X4 in Febb 2018. As the dealer vehicle with 9k miles on it everybody was wanting 36k for 2017 when 18s were out for 38 to 40 k. Haggled a deal in Kansas on 3 trucks and ended getting it 31.500 and no one in Texas could come close .
