Different approach to a snorkel

Can you fold an inch or so of sock around the outside and use a clamp?

 

I have an aluminum air "horn" in the open end of the intake inside the cowl, so for my application I just need to keep the sock from slipping back over that. Also, since the "sock" that I bought is designed to go over a cone filter on an ATV, I had to sew one of the openings shut to make it work on my setup; not all that tough to do by hand with just a drugstore sewing kit though.

If you just have the open hose/pipe as the end of the intake, then a clamp could work to hold the "sock" in place, but I'm not sure if just the hose would give enough push-back to give the clamp a good grip the way that a rigid metal tube would. How to attach the prefilter will depend largely on your actual configuration.

You definitely need some kind of soft buffer between a metal tube and the bulkhead, though; for a while my inlet horn was in contact with the hole in the wall and it caused a really distracting rattle when the engine was running (as well as some nasty galling on the aluminum part).

 

You can slit a length of vacuum hose (or any hose), and push it on around the cut hole to produce a nice grommet

Have some ratting going on from the aluminum tube. Probably would go 3.25 hole saw instead. Going to have to figure out a way to tighten up the gap

 

Having a tighter hole won't get rid of the rattle as long as you've got metal to metal contact. You need to get either a pad around the tube or a grommet of some sort in the hole. Something like a length of fuel line hose that's slit will work, or there's rubber trim that's made to protect door edges that should work. I think the OP on this thread used some kind of a plumbing gasket/grommet on his. Personally I stuck a few patches of heavy duty felt furniture padding (happened to have some from another project, costs maybe $5 at Home Depot) around the outside of the air horn; you could probably do a strip of it around your pipe to be the a buffer

 

I do not have metal on metal contact. I used 1/4” fuel hose but the intake tube vibrating is enough for me to hear it from inside the truck.

I guess since it’s not a “snug” fit that it’s able to vibrate enough for me to hear it

 

If that's all it is, you could just stuff a rag or something between the tube and the hole on one side to keep it from moving around. Or wrap some tape or something around the end of the tube to bulk it up and make it tighter, but that could take a lot of wraps.Something like this might work for you.

I have had mine for a few yrs now works great in almost everything i through at it. Water has not been a problem yet. This past weekend I found a flaw. Silt beds!, after this when I hit the hwy way I had to pull over and knock the dust out. Filter was so clogged engine was starving for air and had no power. But after a quick few bangs against the tire with the filter, i was back on the road. I think with all the silt that came over the hood it settled into the Valance and when i reached 65+ it sucked right up into the filter.

 

Hmm so maybe this is a bad idea?

 

Has anyone cut a hole or holes on the side of the cowl to give a little more air to the system since it is being used by the hvac and engine?

If you have photos of it please share as i'm contemplating doing it to have assurance i'm supplying enough air to the engine and cab.

Both sides. I didn’t run it without the extra holes, so I can’t compare with and without. No issues that I can tell. Sound in the truck is a little different with the cowl intake mod. A little throaty on acceleration. Which I notice since I’m running 34s on stock gearing. But with my roof racks (which are already loud). The wife actually likes the sound. Win win

Hey hey, OP checking in here. Stopped by to grab the link for a FB discussion, figured I'd see what y'all have been doing with this thread.

Deekyn- How is the fresh-air HVAC flow on high fan while under WOT? Do you notice any drop in flow?
Since you opened up the cowl before running it closed, you don't have a before-&-after comparison. But you should be able to weigh in on how the HVAC air is doing.

If you don't see a drop in HVAC flow, then I think you came up with a solution to really the only issue this mod has. I may try doing that myself.
