I was on CL looking around and saw a diagram somewhat like this on an old Rockford amp someone was selling. Wondered if you could do this to all 2 channel amps. I forgot what it was called, there was a name for it on the amp but can't find it anymore.

From what I was thinking (since I have an AC truck), wiring my front speakers regularly to one channel ea. then bridging it like so with the rear sub ... given that this will actually work.

I have a 10" kicker cvr right now, as for the fronts I'm not sure what I was going to get yet. As for the amp, for sure one that will be able to handle it all. CVR is dual 4 ohm.
Mainly seeing if this way of wiring will work.

well on the Rockford amp it was called something else. I know what bridging is, this was refered to as something diferent (your still wiring 2 reg speakers to their respected channels, then daisy chaining off where you would bridge for the 3rd speaker/sub).

Bridging, your bridging the two channels for the third speaker

I wouldn't recommend doing this with your front speakers though. Seems to me like you'd either be underpowering your sub or overpowering your speakers

I'd avoid that wiring configuration like the plague.

I'm thinking the original drawing probably suggested an either/or case. Meaning that you'd either wire two subs (one on each channel) or bridge the two channels on the amp for either a single or dual sub setup.

Unless I missed something, you can't run a sub per channel and then bridge the two channels with a third sub. That's like dividing by zero; we're not sure what happens but we're pretty sure it's not good.

That wouldn't work if you are using your front speakers and a sub. normally you would have the LPF (low pass filter) turned on on the amplifier if you are running subs off of it and you would be sending the same frequencies to your front speakers. So if you have the freq. cut off at 100hz for example, you would only be sending 100hz or less to your front speakers.

It was called tri-way. As shown, a pair of normal 4 ohm speakers would be connected in stereo and then you could bridge an 8 ohm sub across the channels. Remember, when bridging the amp "sees" half the load (i.e., amp sees 4 ohms when an 8 ohm driver is bridged).

To be most effective passive crossovers are oftened used.

BINGO!!!! so is it good to do on any 2 channel or was it just the case for the old Rockfords? I have a 2 channel right now that I can only bridge (my older brother used this amp in his old vehicle and lost 2 of the connecting bolts).

I guess it is time to show my age. Back in the late 80's and early 90's car stereo competitions were based on your amps power into 4 ohms speakers. (Almost all car speakers were 4 ohms back then and we also had no dual voice coil speakers either).

So you would buy a 50w x 2 high current amp and go into the 100w and under class. Then, you would wire every speaker in your car up to this one amp using passive x-overs.

The amps a remember most that could run this way were the ultra-high current ones. They were the Autoteck 9000 series, Orion Red Series, Phoniex Gold and Precision Power. Rockford Fosgate was the first amp to run a tri-mode that I remember but, Rockford was not the best. Orion Red Series or Phoniex Gold were the best.

Anyway, I remember helping a friend install a competition system with one Orion Red Amp and twelve 12" subs and 4 pairs of MB Quart Mids and Highs. I think we ended up with a 1 ohm load on the mids and highs. And a one ohm load on the subs.

These ultra-high current amps were good down to a 1/2 ohm level. I have been out of the stereo game for a long time, so I don't know if anyone makes this type of high current amp anymore but, it is amazing to see one of them work.

LOL I remember those days. In the early 90's, the shop I used to hang out at built a K5 Blazer with 16 Kicker 15's and 5 Orion HCCA 50's, 4 on subs and one on mids/highs. Only 250 watts........

See us old shits still have something to show you :D

I am thinking about installing a ThrowBack system in my next car.

I have 2 High Current mint Phoniex Gold MS 275 (capable of Tri-Mode). The MS 275 have consecutive serial numbers.

I am looking to find a Phoniex Gold Cyclone Sub System (if you never heard one of these, do yourself a favor and look it up) http://www.audiojunkies.com/product/1006/phoenix-gold-cyclone-reviews

I also have 2 pairs of old mint MB Quart 6.5 speakers (one pair is a component and one pair is a co-ax).

Then, all I will be missing from my old system is Nakamichi Cassette Player Head Unit, Fosgate Pre-Amp, AudioControl EQ and AudioControl X-Over. I think I will move up to a Nakamichi CD Player this time around though.

As you can tell, I miss the old days of car stereo!

I just got a kicker zx100.2 amp to power my components and it has this configuration listed in it. I agree with most everyone else though and would not use it. This amp only puts out 100 watts anyway haha.
