How do I wire backup camera to reverse lighting and dpdt switch?

Wiring noob here. I’m trying to figure out how to wire a front and reverse camera to one dpdt switch, and still have backup cam work in reverse. Just can’t seem to get my head in the right thinking mode to figure this out. Couldn’t find any vids or diagrams to follow. I’ve got a 2006 so neither the Anytime harness not the Car solutions will work for me since they say they are for 09+ stock radios. I have a Pioneer avh-1500nex head unit if that makes any difference. Any help is appreciated.

 

That seems overly complicated. Have you considered wiring the front camera to constant power and connecting it to the AV jack on the deck?


When you want front camera just choose AV input icon from the home menu.

 

Yeah I’ve thought about it, but I wanted to be able to check the back camera too while pulling my trailer without having to look at the screen to find a button to push. With the switch, I’ll know right where it’s at.

 

you can hold down the button next to the home button (don’t remember if it’s above of below) and it will activate the camera input

I think that is just what I’m looking for. Thank you. The diodes make it so I can run the camera in reverse or from the switch, correct?

 

The diodes are used for protecting the OE electronics and make it so that you don't power up the reverse lights with the switch. And also that you don't feed power to the switch with the reverse lighting circuit.

With the switch ON - you will see the reverse camera.
With the switch OFF - you will see the front camera.

Selecting reverse will send power to the relay in the same fashion as turning on the switch.

PS: If you don't like the Diodes, we can add another relay and do the same thing.

 

Looking at the drawing makes it look so simple. I’ve been racking my brain for weeks and Googling trying find some sort of schematic or videoor something to at least get me started in the right direction. I just wasn’t thinking about the diodes. Thank you so much again.

Sorry to keep bugging you, but would this drawing also apply to a single pole double throw switch, so both cameras could be off if desired? If so, how would the wiring be on the switch?

 

You would have to add a 3 position switch and another relay. The second relay would just simply disable the cameras. The 3 position switch would work:

Position 1 - Revers camera selected.
Position 2 - Front camera selected.
Position 3 - OFF

Sure, I'll have it in just a minute. The second relay will need to be DPDT. Not real common in automotive. But you can still find them.

 

OK here is what I got. For this to work, you need to source a DPDT "Normally Closed" relay. Not sure how hard this will be to find. But I believe that it's available. My try somebody like BlueSeas?

Yep, I seen that too. May have to go back to the DPDT in order to get what is needed. This one has both NO and NC contacts. But it will work. The socket is available on the bottom of the page.

Why do I want a NC for the second relay? Don’t I want the NO so when I flip the switch for the front camera it will close the circuit on the second relay? I’m probably just overthinking this.

 

The NC relay makes the switch logic work easier. It would be more complicated with a NO relay.
