I engine brake on my bike all the time, it's nice. I also downshift my truck at slower speeds so I can "coast" going in slow traffic. if you're going slow enough to "jerk" when in gear try to level out the speed a little. yes, you will get the assholes who like to lane jump but ultimately not get a workout on the left leg

boy I remember my '85 5spd Tempo, best $1k I ever spent on a vehicle and taught me a ton about driving without worrying if I damaged the car (side note: I always hated backing up with a manual, even on a slight grade)

I'm running a TDI Golf Sportwagen, 700 lbs of tools, 43 mpg. Torque down low, lots of torque, this thing runs around at 1,100 rpm, and still pulls strong. First modern diesel, love it.

Haha you just reminded me my first car ever at 16 was an old 86 5 spd Ford Tempo! Damn I had forgotten all about that thing. I guess it was only ten years old when I drove it for under a year before totaling it:anonymous:

I'd love a diesel just to have even more low rpm torque. Those VW tdi small cars are suuuuuper tempting. And I love that you use it like a truck :D

The octane doesn’t matter so much as the ethanol content. E0 is way better for sitting as ethanol will gum things up and break down over times.

depending on where I go, e0 may be either 87 or 91.

Put that engine in Tacoma and then compare apple to apple. Or compare this 2.0 TDI with 1.8 TSI in the same car. By the way small saving on the fuel with TDi is balance by high maintenance cost or (like in Poland), it is not balanced and than these cars drive and smokes like a choo-choo train.:turtleride:

For what it's worth Toyota Hilux around 1995 (equivalent of my Tacoma) offered 3.0 Diesel engine. Gas mileage was quite close to what we have in Tacoma, but performance was close to small farm tractor. Later (in 1997) they came with Turbo Diesel (2L-T) but the performance was not even close to 3RZ. Compare apple to apple - truck to truck, year to year.

I always heard engine breaking is not actually bad for a vehicle. I engine brake everywhere and have done so since I got my 5 lug 10 months ago. Maybe I'm doing shit wrong but everything on the truck works the same when I bought it and I drive this thing like hell. (20 k miles now in 10 months)

25,000 miles, 2015, S model, low trim level, still has a bunch of stuff in it to play with, no nav. Total stealth mobile, can go 98 mph through a school zone smoking pot, no one notices.....joking just joking.

That's a Land Cruiser 79 series. They are available in most parts of the world that aren't North America. Toyota has never sold them in the US unfortunately, and AFAIK they still don't even offer automatic transmissions in them. Based on the Australian prices, they would probably start at 50k if they were ever sold in the US.

You see them most in Australia and Middle East/North Africa. In Australia people drive them as farm trucks and overland rigs. In MENA they are often used by militaries and local militias as technicals or troop transports. The first year of the 79 series was 1999, so they should be available to import here in 4 years once they are 25 years old. This truck is setup as an AA truck operated by our Kurdish allies in Syria.

I don't see how it possibly could be bad for the engine (or transmission), which adds to the irony of how my friend's dad treated his car.

Ethanol free gas only amounts to about 3% of gasoline in the US, at least according to the link I posted earlier. If anything, you're less likely to get higher octane E0 because ethanol is most commonly used to increase the octane rating, that and subsidize the corn farmers, lol.

    Around here:
    Casey’s 87e10 or 87e0
    Kwiktrip 87e10 89e15 91e0

91e0 is fairly common around here. “Recreational gasoline” they call it for boats and other stuff

It's Iowa, so I'm not surprised. Hard NOT to have one in your backyard, lol.

Corn is cool to eat - delicious in fact - I just don't think it should be made into fuel.

Ah I see, my bad. Today's my Friday and I'm halfway done with my shift rn so it was hard to interpret that, haha. One of my favorite things from going auto on my last truck to manual with my taco is engine breaking with my exhaust :D:D glad to hear I can continue on with it

Maybe the "myth" came from 2 stroke engines (bikes) where oil in gas is used for lubrication. Engine braking would run high rpm on "dry" (no oil). This is why cars with 2-stroke engines had free-wheel so the engine braking is not possible.

I suppose I should inject here that I'm in the staunch habit of "manualizing" my automatics, otherwise known as "cowboying the gears". I've been this way for my entire 40-year driving career. Especially where I live where literally 90% of all the roads are hilly. I use the lower gears manually in both the Tacoma and the Lexus. Both uphill and down.
This might explain how I got almost 39,000 miles out of my last set of Tacoma brakes, despite all the hills here.
I wish my RX350 had what my stepson's 2010 Highlander has-where it automatically downshifts as you go down a hill. To me that is such a cool attribute. His Highlander is badass. It even has this air-bladder leveling thing that works during cornering. And full-time AWD. Amazing.
But I thought I'd add in here about using engine braking with an auto trans. I do it all the time.

I engine brake in the winter when going down inclines that may be icy or covered in snow.
