You could get substantially more if you went through insurance. My hitch moved slightly, dimpled my bumper in two spots, and it was a $1200 check to me.

Also, check the gap between rear quarters and bumper, if the bumper pushed into the body panel then $$$$.

Nothing pushed into the panels, the only thing even noticeable (and only to me because its my truck) is the bumper is just slightly lower than it was before

Yikes! I sincerely hope you didn't shoot yourself in the foot. A very slight bend in the frame can not be determined by just looking at it. I wonder if the guy that looked at it even does body and frame repair.

Right but people on this forum have had substantially harder hits with no frame damage.

Then you'd be selling the truck with a slightly bent frame to another buyer? Worst case scenario though right?

Was kind of joking. In all reality i had my truck inspected and nothing looked out of the ordinary even with measurements.

Or I can call back his dad and say hey I wanna get my frame inspected through insurance by a collision repair shop that would love the business if they could find any slight reason to suspect there may be frame damage.

What would you do? This post is for suggestions because i haven't been rear ended before and figured toyotas don't have frames made of fucking toothpicks

Technically you took 500 for the damage and said thank you. It could be considered a contract. May have shot your self in the foot.

Your frame may very well be fine, but if it is bent down in the back, that's not going to be determined with a tape measure and a tram gauge. (Doubt the dealer service dept even owns a tram gauge) If the dealer didn't charge you for their "inspection", then their opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it. I'm sure they didn't put it in writing that there's no frame damage.

You've already made a deal with the dad. I'm not going to go on about your decision to ask for more money if you later determine that the frame is bent.

the father is being super cool about it and let me know if my frame does end up being damaged he'd contact insurance etc. having it inspected again by a collision repair shop to make sure its all good. I dont think I shot myself in the foot, I think I'm trying to not fuck over anyone including myself over something with no visual damage.

haven't taken the money yet as I still wanted a second opinion on my frame. Nothing has been set in stone because legally I never officially agreed to the money until I know my frame is not damaged.

Well that’s is good of him. I said then hopefully his word is good. Because he could say y’all had a deal. But if he’s willing to take the $5oo back and file with his insurance. That’s what I’d to do it’s inspected properly and there is documents saying the truck is good to go and you get compensated properly for any issues.

And for all of you saying "No you agreed to it etc as a contract" I study business law in school right now. I know what wording is legally binding and only so if it is recorded lol

Don't bet anyanything on that panning out. He may be cooperative right now, but as soon as he doesn't want his rates going up that'll be the end of it. Insurance companies aren't out there to help you, so they'll lap up the excuses that you didn't report it right away and could've been caused elsewhere especially when dad forgets what happened.

The driver fucked up, and has insurance, no reason for you to take the blame, and likely the penalty.

True I am concerned about the timing but then again I have a third party witness and her consent as a witness and contact information so I think I'm set if push comes to shove.

I've been in court rooms more than most people at my age, for good and for bad.

If you do end up taking the $500 for the damage, from the father, please share the hold harmless agreement that you write up to absolve the father and son for any future liability. This could be valuable for future TW members that find themselves in your position.

Why would I absolve the at-fault party for future liability when that would only benefit them in case I find a suspension issue a month later and want some more compensation?.... either way under the table for this would be my choice (if my frame is good) vs. car fax lowering my resale price because of a minor fender bender reported to insurance..... And it would be their choice as well vs. their rates going up and his son having expensive insurance for another 7 years.

Well you just showed your character, take 500 under the table then fuck them later, yep your in law school. Just file the claim against the insurance and be done with it.
