    Morning all,

Question for the hive mind , has anyone had their windows repaired vs replaced? The window portions themselves not the whole frame and all. I have to get mine fixed one way or the other several seals have failed and the weather seals on the bottom sash has started crumbling. They are Patriot windows ...made by ply gem . The rep the window maker has is not great so getting an estimate on repair. But considering just having them replaced with Andersen or Pella.

My landlords had a bunch of the windows in the building repaired when the seals went bad and they started to get this weird hard water like stain between the panes. They had to come back and replace some a couple years later as the same thing started to happen to the new Windows. So far so good but the quality just doesnt seem to be as good as a new window.
Guess it all comes down to budget and will the crew doing the work do a quality job or a hack job. How old are the current Windows and would you benefit from getting something new thats more energy efficient?

That is what I am debating these are 21 year old double panes. If I could get the same out of the repairs it would be a no brainer repair and move on. And yeah if I get them replaced finding a crew that will do the job well.

Might be some tax credits for upgrading to some new Windows if theyre that old. Might be tough even finding a crew that will take on repairing them.

Why does my phone keep capitalizing Windows? Were talking about windows not Windows!

Google and Apple both assume that if you're talking about a large amount of $$$ for a windows upgrade that it refers to Windows and not windows.

We used Anderson & Pella when I worked with my dad, they’re solid, when we replace the windows in our house it will be Anderson

We have gone the route of local factory built windows and they’re fine for a while but the seals end up going shitways and we get condensation between the panes

Up here Anderson are waaay expensive. A buddy got comparable replacement windows through a local outfit at a third of the Andersen quote. Shop around I guess is my point.

Hmmm...interesting. Wonder if the old "buy once cry once" & "you get what you pay for" might apply.

Definitely food for thought. Thank you.

I replaced mine with Andersen. I bought new construction units from HD, pulled the trim off the inside/outside and put these in. The driver on which brand was the rough opening size. The ones I used had the same basic rough opening (about 1/2" bigger) and that eliminated any structural work. I found this way to be less expensive than quality custom fit replacements.

I had to replace one window because it was rotted through. I chose Anderson Renewal because they could match the style of my window, which adds a lot to the character of my house (a 1939 bungalow). It was pricey but very much worth it for aesthetics and functionality. Eventually I would like to replace the other windows on the north side of the house since they are in poor condition (the house was vacant for several years before I bought it and the gutters on that side failed during that time). My other original windows are in very good condition, still, even after 80 years.
