OME BP-51 Install Report and Height Adjustment

i read that someone would install these on the springs while the vehicle was on the ground. Then when they lifted the vehicle off the ground that slack gave them enough looseness to adjust the coil over height. I’ve never done this myself just relaying info I’ve read here somewhere on Tacoma World.

 

What did you end up setting your caster at on your SPC control arms? Also, with the 5mm factory setting, do you know what your height yield is from the lift? Thanks!

 

Sorry no, I neglected to measure before I had them installed so i’m not sure of the overall height gain . I started out with the factory 1” lift on 265/70/17’s and moved up to 285/70/17’s so i gained a little bit with the taller tire.

Unable to get my alignment spec sheet for the numbers as i’m on the road right now. But if memory serves after the install I had 24” on the front and 26.5” in the rear measured from the top of the hub to the bottom of the fender

 

So, installing this BP-51 kit has been an adventure. Got with my buddy who's a mechanic and has a lift at his shop this past Saturday. We installed everything without a fuss, except for a few minor annoyances (plastic collar guards for the rear shocks and attaching the front reservoirs to the frame). After we set the truck back down on the stock wheels/tires you could tell it had a major rake to it. Luckily, I took measurements before installing everything. Here's what I got.

Post lift with factory setting of 5mm on coilovers with a 1/4" Headstrong spacer and the heavy duty rear leaf springs:
Front Driver - 1.25"
Front Passenger - 1.25"
Rear Driver - 3.5"
Rear Passenger - 3.5"




That was way too much rake for me at 2.25" difference. So, I took my truck back home and jacked it back up and removed the front coilovers this past Monday. I tried to use some spring compressors that were recommended on a thread here, but they were kind of sketchy and were starting to make contact with the body of the shock. Decided it was best to take them to someone with a wall mounted spring compressor. I had already purchased the tool to use with a wall mount compressor to make the job a little easier. After scrambling around, I found a shop that could do it for me right then (since I had already taken off work to do this). Got them set to 15mm right before they closed the doors and headed home to install. Luckily I had some whiskey on standby in a glass I purchased of the TW forum. Next post with the continuance of what happened next.....

 

Well, I get home and notice that one of the shocks looks like it's leaking. ARB is closed, so looks like I'm waiting until the morning to figure it out. Great! At least I had the whiskey there to keep me company.... Call ARB first thing this morning (10am my time since they are on the west coast) and shoot them the picture below and they confirm it's a definite leak and needs to be replaced. YAY! I told them that I had already paid to have them adjusted to 15mm and would like the new one to come set at the same height to same me some time and money. Said it would be no problem and I have one on the way.




However, I already had an appointment scheduled to have my new wheels and tires mounted/balanced and an alignment done. So, I went ahead and installed the leaky coilover and just dropped it off at the shop to get everything done. Figure I'll just remove the damaged coilover and replace it with the new one preset at the same height and not have to do another alignment and rock on. Should have some pictures with the new lift/wheels/tires this evening or first thing tomorrow. Will be a big change for the little truck. Here are the new measurements on the front going from 5mm to 15mm:

Front Driver - 3"
Front Passenger - 3"

Only a 1" rake now and looks a lot better. New tires should yield another 1" total of lift from the ground.

 

glad they took care of you and are replacing the shock. So at 5mm plus the 1/4” spacer up front you only netted 1.25”? Is your truck pretty much stock or do you have any added weight? Let us know how the ride feels once you get it dialed in! I'm curious to see learn how much it settles in to as well.

I’m planning to install the bp-51 soon on my pretty much Stock weight +100lb sr5 4x4 and have been lurking these threads to find out what I should set mine at so I appreciate your detailed info!

it’s a stock Trd pro. Only thing that might be added weight is the factory aluminum skid plate. But yeah, I only netted 1.25 on the front. Was super disappointed in that. At 15mm it’s sitting just right in my opinion. I’ll get some pics up as soon as I can.

btw, running 285/75r16’s with no rubbing issues at all. No cab mount chop.

 

I think too many ppl were installing the kit with no other mods and saying the suspension was topping out. ARB designed it to be set at 20mm with a front bumper and winch. 15mm for just a front bumper.

 

Doesn’t the trd pro have about 1” higher lift over the other models? I know I’ve read that somewhere, but not sure how true it is. Was it mentioned to arb when you contacted them about the 1.25” @ 5mm that it was a pro?

 

I’m pretty sure I mentioned it but am not certain. I’ve read that the pro is 1 inch taller as well. Not sure what a stock OR measures out to be. But I have my stock measurements if someone wants to measure the front end of their OR. From the hub and the ground to feeder well edge.

 

I don't have the numbers on hand, but I've got a 2019 OR and recently threw the PRO fox setup on. Gives and extra 1" in the front, I believe the rear is the same and the OR. Been lurking on this thread as I believe I'm going to go the BP-51 route in due time.

 

Sounds like the BP kit would give the standard Tacoma a 2" lift then. Well, I'm also running a 1/4" spacer that is supposed to add a 1/2" of lift.

 

i measured my fairly stock SR5. I have about 100-120lb of sliders, a 40 lb tonneau cover, and Airbags that could be helping the rear a tad.

measurements are
Front Ground to Fender 34.5”
Front Center Hub to fender 20.75”

Rear Ground to fender 36”
Rear Center Hub to fender 22”

 

My stock Pro was 36.25" in the rear and 35.75" in the front. For reference.

yes, stock tires. 265/70r16. Which would confirm that the TRD Pro's do sit 1" higher then other models.

 

Sweet, I'm thinking I might go 7~10mm with the 1/4 spacer on my rig and shoot for 2.5" lift up front paired with the Medium Duty Dakars

 

You can get the heavy duty springs and if they are too much, you can remove the 3rd leaf and it becomes a medium duty pack. Cheaper to buy it all at once just in case you need the heavy duty pack later on.

 

I thought a lot about this. Good to have the option to switch in case I change my mind. I’ll probably run medium duty’s as I have just a 30-50 lb tonneu cover abd Sliders and that’s it for weight in the back. I want the plushest ride possible and have airbags for when I tow or add weight.
