I read the letter and it mentioned nothing about being the first owner so I assume you’re covered.

My situation is that my truck is a 2013 with 22,000 miles. I am in the car wash and detail business so it stays pretty clean although I have played in the snow a bit, but mostly in deep and fresh snow and I got a dolly and pressure washer and washed the under body pretty good afterward each time.
I want this truck to last a couple decades because by the time my grandkid(s) are old enough to drive (if I have any) I want to teach them to drive a manual in it, if mine is not the only one left by then. I want to keep this truck for the rest of my life if possible. It’s already kind of a novelty being a regular cab, manual transmission Taco. It surely will be in the future.

So my plan is to get under it soon with a wire brush and rust prohibiting paint then take it to a dealer and have their undercoating sprayed on it (within two years) since it’s necessary to retain the 12 year from DOP warranty. Or would it be smarter to just let it rust for two years, let them spray over the rust and hope it gets rusty enough for them to replace it in six years?

Personally, I wouldn't let Toyota spray my frame. From the pictures I've seen, the crc treatment does nothing but compound and accelerate the rusting problem. Just fluid film it, which is what I plan to do when I get mine back from the dealer.

what about the big red lines in the notice where it says clearly that CRC application is REQUIRED to qualify for the replacement program? Telling people not to get that done is making it a hella lot harder if not impossible for them to get a frame replacement later on. Who cares if the CRC makes the rust worse, it will rust out faster and get a replacement sooner.

What if the crc causes it to rust, but not fail before the time is up? Then he has also shot himself in the foot. Since he sounds like he keeps things nice and drives the truck very little, it would probably behoove him to take the care of his frame into his own hands so to speak.

I decided I’m going to do this. Remove the visible rust. Paint with Por-15. Then Fluid Film inside the frame and out. Then let Toyota coat it. Then FF yearly.9489A790-A6B2-4E54-AE31-FE549E580954.jpg

Toyota will probably pressure wash off your fluid film before they apply there coating.

I got the letter yesterday. I’m the second owner bought it in 2017.

    AND IT’S NOT A RECALL. It’s a service campaign.

Based of the settlement of a class action lawsuit. So remember you’re not a customer at this point but a class member. I’d highly recommend skimming through the settle and reading the relief section so you don’t end up in the SOL boat with me.

I think it’s different. Folks eligible for actual frame replacement are members of the class action lawsuit.

With the Service Bulletin letter, Toyota is attempting (solely based on my opinion) to limit frame replacements in the future by mandating compliance with the SB now. All the folks not doing the SB recommendations within the timeframe are going to be excluded if their frames rot out.

I am not part of the class action lawsuit with my 2015.

Sorry you’re in that situation btw. The lesson I’m walking away with is:
    1) In my own inspection, if any ‘assistance’ is needed, it will be as natural looking as possible; and
    2) Admit NOTHING to NO ONE if action in 1 is necessary..

Ah, you’re right. My 08 was in the original 05-10 range or whatever it was. Either way, the evaluation procedures are gonna be the same so you’re points are spot on. Worst of it my first use was end of April so I could have let it have another Ohio winter before being looked at. I do wonder if compressed air would leave any evidence on a soft spot. But absolutely no shiny spots.

This would be my advice too. It may not be just the frame that rusts but the body too. My frame is new but there's a lot of crusty mess on other parts. Heck, even my brake caliper piston rusted through. Preserving it now while things are relatively solid seems like the way to go.

I just got my truck back. I've put a 100 miles on it so far, and am satisfied. No out of pocket costs what so ever, and no upsell on stuff not needed. I have to applaud Uebelhor Toyota in Jasper, Indiana. I got to see what the cost was...$10,660. Glad I wasn't paying that bill!

That's awesome gtrotter! Here's hoping you get many more years out of it. My frame was replaced too and they did a great job.

I saved the paperwork from Toyota and the list of replaced parts just goes on and on. Surprised they gave it new lower control arms with new ball joints. Rear leafs, just about every brake line and what seems like hundreds of new clips and fasteners. Pages of part numbers. Toyota did right by me.

I had heard here and there the cost was at least 10k and could be a lot higher. Dealer that that did mine had multiple stacks of frames and a big backlot full of trucks waiting for new frames. Tundras, Sequoias but mostly Tacomas. They must be making a ton of money changing them out. They had mine for about six weeks.

Got mine back an hour ago. Just got home. No headlights and no fog lights. Out into the driveway in the rain I go to see if I can unfuck it. F Toyota and their frames and F Towne Toyota.
