I am trying to find out if anyone else has had problems with an Oil Leak on their 2016 Tacoma, TRD Offroad, 4 X 4. I first had a leak about 8 to 10 months ago. After 2 visits to the Toyota Dealer, it was determined that I had a leaky Valve Cover Gasket on the Drivers side. Gasket was replaced under warranty. Now, amount 10 months later and about 8 - 10 thousand miles, smell has returned as before. No visible leaks from outside view. Please let me know if you have had the same issue/problem.

Check under powersteering pump... that area had leaving timing chain gasket on some early builds.

    Are you still under warranty?

If you don't see oil leaks are you sure that's the problem? When you say smell is it through the AC vents etc?

If it's the timing chain cover, then yes its a common problem. Requires removing the engine or disassembling the entire front end to replace.

Took mine in today. Crawl underneath, shine a flashlight up towards the power steering pump. If you see oil drops or residue, it is the timing chain cover. Also make sure you have a warranty. It's a minimum of $4000 to repair. If you'd like for me to post what I received today, I'll be glad to.

For the sake of it. They will drop the transmission, remove the engine, and replace a lot of gaskets and o-rings. Thank goodness for an extended warranty.

Also worth mentioning, that not only is it a common occurrence. I'm certain many have this going on and have no clue. (For now.)

It was a thing on the 2nd gens as well.

This. I had to have my front crank seal replaced at 25,000 miles. It was leaking out of the timing cover. I thought it was power steering fluid.

The service tech said they have had thos crank seals completely blow out of some of the trucks they have seen. Keep an eye on it all.

I'm not sure when mine started, but one day I decided to check my oil and it was a 1/4 of a quart low. Probably not long after 70k which was back in July. It's awfully defined now, so the Taco is parked until it's scheduled in for the repair. No need to risk a blowout. Lol

Well I went to a Tire Discount Store for normal oil change. Luckily for me, one of the mechanics is a Tacoma Geek like me. We discovered that oil was leaking around the same area as when initial leak happen at 35000 mile. Have taken to Toyota dealer about 3 times and they were unable to find. Will take in next week with pics of where the leak is. Just glad I found out where it is coming from so hopefully can get it fixed and get rid of the sporadic smell. Will update post as I go along.

sortof stock. 6112/5160, pro wheels and a tune.
mine is in right now for the timing cover leak. apparently they replace nearly all the seals and gasgets on the engine, so the service advisor says. they didn’t pull the block on mine, they just took the entire front end off. thank god for warranty’s.

mine is an early 2016 sr5 4x4 btw.

Well the mechanic at Tire Discounter took pics of leak and sent to the Toyota Service department for me. Service Department has ordered new Valve Cover Gasket. Waiting for gasket to arrive. Am very happy that the Toyota Service Department finally confirmed leak. Am anxious to see if 2nd Valve Cover Gasket fixes the leak. I have searched the internet and have not found that this is a common problem. I just want to get it fixed while my warranties cover it.

Went in for oil change and they said I might have a timing cover leak. It’s still under warranty as I just hit 50,000 but I’m worried about everything that needs to be taken apart and reassembled. Hoping they don’t screw up anything else while they fix it.

You'll know pretty quickly if they screwed something up, either by way of strange noises or check engine light. And there's always a warranty on engine repairs, so I wouldn't worry about it.
