Your Verizon service isn’t gonna work at all if you actually leave the city and do some real exploring in the world. And you can get the integrated maps updated, it shows OHV Jeep trails on mine dude..I will agree if you have to suffer sitting in traffic everyday, Apple is probably better to have lol

Wondering if it has to have premium audio with the factory remote start package to get integrated maps?

Are people really saying that Toyota's garbage navigation is better than Google Maps navigation through an Android Auto interface? Satellite vs cell signal...has nobody heard of Offline Maps downloads?

This is correct. When clicking on the Navi button, it says 'not installed'. Sure enough, base audio doesn't come with built in navi.

So you can upgrade the head unit to have built in nav?

Even if theres a cost associated the dealer doesn’t even know about this option. Can anyone confirm?

If I remember correctly, from past readings. Head unit would need to be replaced, GPS module, and antenna.

Wow that’s really fancy. Doesn’t mean Entune is garbage..Go ahead and put it down but anyone complaining about “ancient tech” all the time are the ones who finance a new truck every couple of years because they just have to have the latest and greatest features. Some folks are just never happy with what they’ve got.

I came from a 2004 Nissan Frontier to a 2020 Tacoma so I hardly fit your description. I'm just not a Toyota apologist for everything they do or don't do. My wife has a 2016 Lexus NX and previously a 2014 4Runner so I'm no stranger to Toyota's awful Entune experience. Even prior to having this Tacoma with Android Auto I refused to use Entune nav because of how clunky it was to use. I much prefer Google Maps with the voice directions played over blueooth audio. Google Maps + offline downloads + bluetooth > Entune any day of the week.

With Android Auto and Apple Car Play, I'm not even sure why car manufacturers continue to install their crapware. Just give me a bare bones head unit that can interface with my phone. Google and Apple have some of the best developers on the planet, car OEMs should leave that stuff to the pros.

I come from a 1991 MR2 Turbo..so Entune is super high tech to me lol. And I’m gonna keep my Pro for a million miles just like my dads 1985 4Runner

My 2020 trd off-road with just tech pkg doesn’t have entune navigation either? my map button displays the same message? I was under the impression it had it. 40k doesn’t get you much nowadays. Lol

I can get the argument of satnav over cell service maps.... If I was calling in an airstrike

If you have used any technology newer than Mapquest, you would see how bad the entune navigation is compared to anything else.

In 5 years auto manufacturers won't even bother building smarts into infotainment systems, it's a waste of time. There's an entire ecosystem of staffed developers fighting to make their mapping app the best (Waze, Google Maps, Apple Maps), auto manufacturers can't be expected to keep up with that pace of development.

I personally am loving CarPlay on my 2020 Tacoma. My only complaint is that Toyota are using a fairly crappy quality screen on this new head unit. I think it may also be contributing to the complaints about the camera quality on trucks equipped with that feature. I have that as well. I went from a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee (lease was up) when I got back into a Tacoma and I had CarPlay on the Jeep. I immediately noticed how much less sharp the Tacoma screen was compared to my 8.4inch high-res screen in the Jeep. I’ve adjusted to the Tacoma now, but switching that day I bought it I was surprised to see Toyota using that noticeably worse screen. I mean, we know how they roll....drum brakes, etc. ;) But I do hope they use a sharper panel at some point!

You can purchase the EnTune Premium HU w/GPS Integration in 2 different ways.
    1) Dealer Installed - Cost is about $4,000.00
    2) Purchase a "pull-off" from someone who has changed their unit out to an aftermarket ( I just did this myself - purchased a unit on this forum in the for sale section for $350. And then purchased a new bezel for $211).

I'm really happy with entune maps. Love the track log feature for off roaring... Prefer it over cellular maps.

Not saying that either is better. But, you gotta admit, integrated navigation is a lot more convenient. You don't need a phone mirroring device. You don't need to down-load maps. And you don't need to operate your phone to use the GPS. Just simply punch in the coordinates a go.

I'm "myself" am trying to get handle on using off-line maps just incase the need ever actually arises. I do prefer moving maps as apposed to simple turn-by-turn guidance. And I'm not crazy about the fact that off-line maps will not provide "Lane Assistance".

    Just my $0.02

Carplay IS integrated. I don't ever have to touch my phone. You can input everything you need to from the dashboard.. My phone also has my entire metropolitan area downloaded already, and auto-updates the download once a month. Much more convenient than trying to update the entune maps.

It's actually the opposite. I only buy a truck once every 10 years or so. Which is precisely why I want a radio that has carplay. It can evolve over time without requiring a new head unit or a new truck. I don't need to buy new updates from toyota for maps either. As my phone evolves, maps evolve, and apps evolve, I can get all of them on my carplay unit immediately without having to buy more stuff or get a new truck.

Built in NAV is just simpler and more reliable, especially on long road trips through remote areas. It's inconvenient to have to plan out where you will need to download offline maps on long trips... Never need to do that with built in. Just enter an address and go. Yeah the maps need to be updated, and yeah traffic predictions are nowhere near as good as Google, but I find it gets the job done 90-95% of the time.

I tend to use Google Maps as a backup to the built-in Nav.
