For sure, this class is 100% just to know the process of what’s going on when a surveying crew does their thing.

As soon as I swore off never going to the dealer again, they send me a $15 off oil change coupon. That makes it a whopping $23. Cant beat that if I did it myself haha. So here I sit in the service department...

Never had an issue at this dealer. I noticed they send you better coupons the longer you wait :p. As far as they know, its been 10k since my last change haha.

Yeah I have a couple dealerships doing that to me lately, that I used to go to in the past. Haven't been to a dealership to get any kind of service done in nearly 2 years now. But they are sending me a lot of coupons lately and even calling me/leaving voicemails to come in.

Only thing maintenance-wise I'm considering not doing on my own that's coming up soon is my timing belt - almost at 90k miles and given how old it is especially, I need to get it done. With the holidays and baby coming just around the corner I really don't know if I'm going to want to tackle it. Maybe.

But I sure as hell won't be going to the dealer for that, they'll bend me over coupon or no coupon

Shoot, that reminds me I'm coming up on 7k and time to do my oil too.

I've never run Mobil 1 EP(extended protection), but apparently there is enough TBN (additive package added to the base oil for cleaning, protecting, etc, it's the important stuff) to run it for 15k miles. I might try running that EP stuff and then at 12k pull a sample to analyze at the oil lab. I've always been real curious about that EP stuff and never did run any when I was helping out at that lab

I dont get doing more than 5k mile intervals on older vehicles. You pay over double for that fancy "EP" oil than you would a similar conventional flavor, even 2x over. You save $0 dollars in the long run and get the same protection.

That sounds like the kinda job you do with someone else that's done it before and maybe they're doing something on their truck they need and extra set of hands for, etc. Then you're there and you see what's going on. Even for the backyard mechanic stuff happens that isn't planned. That crap will always happen. The issue is the repair or correction of that stuff that pops up or happens.
The TB/WP job is a nerve racking one first time just due to unfamiliarity. After you do one you're like 'oh that's not too bad really and I saved 6-700 bucks.'

yeah...saving $600-$700 (probably closer to a grand knowing CA shop rates) sounds awesome...but like you said I have no experience going that deep in my engine so I'd definitely need someone there with me that's done it before. I'm sure there are several guys in my area that have, when the time comes I'll put some feelers out and see what life in general looks like around then, if it's something I can take the time to do or not
