Why the Currie 9"? There's some other pretty bullet proof options on the market.

 

All I'm going to say, is for a 23 year old dude like myself, I am making VERY good money and have better benefits/401K than I did when I was in

The key to this is, your girlfriend makes the big bucks as a lawyer, you just have to "supplement" the income

a couple reasons. the currie is pretty much bolt in. might have to modify the driveshaft but thats it. you can also get it wider to match long travel which is my next big thing. it also uses toyota wheel bearings thus factory wheel speed sensors so all that abs stuff will still work. biggest reason though... its just so darn pretty.

i thought about that one actually. i really like how toyota axles and the ford 9" have removable center sections. makes it a lot easier to work on. The other advantages i see of the 9" over the 60 is the ground clearance, weight, and size of the pinion gear. for 9" may have a smaller ring gear but the pinion gears are huge.

 

im sure i could get a better deal if i was in a position to do some fab work. i could always just get a used 9" rear and get custom shafts to match up to toyota bolt pattern and weld all the perches on and stuff, but it still wouldnt work with the factory hardware or abs.

 

do you have any experience or heard anything about diamond axles? their website isnt too helpful but i get the impression that they can make what i need.

 

im going to give them a call and see what a similarly built axle would cost. i saw a thread about a guy that ordered one with a land cruiser 9.5 diff so that the flange and mounting distance were the same so he didnt have to modify his driveshaft. i might have to think about that option. although i know a ford 9" is inherintly stronger.

 

Check the 1st gen build thread I think @Mallburg114 just put one in his truck.

 

im looking at other options. im not as concerned about the wall thickness as the tube size. the currie is only a 3" tube. camburg makes housings but im not sure how complete i can get it and im not trying to weld on axle ends and all that. from what i hear diamond might be my best bet. you can get whatever tube thickness and size you want and their prices seem to be really good based on other peoples comments and reviews, although they have no prices on the website.

EDIT: it appears you can upgrade the currie to 3.5" tubes

 

@ETXTacoma has a Dynatrac rear in his, he could offer some insight

 

Check a guy on here named jberry (I think?) he has a 9in in his 2nd gen.

 

yeah i saw his thread. that rear end looks good under our trucks. its kindof crazy expensive but im not in the mood to spend money on factory parts that clearly arnt strong enough

 

Just throwing ideas out there for you to check before you pull the trigger as I know stock is not strong enough but change is expensive.

Well Iv got a line on a used axle housing from a top notch guy in Colorado (@CGoss) assuming we can figure out the shipping and all that. A Currie would have been great but I’d rather spend that kind of money when I actually have a job. Luckily you tacoma world people are pretty damn helpful when you need to be and I hope to be back up and running soon!

 

Fastenal would probably be the cheapest but it's also SLOW AS SHIT. I forget how long it took to get my bumper from OR to MD but it was several weeks. He's close to Nashville so all the big freight haulers have terminals in the area.
