Gas Mileage vs Weather Changes

Time to switch to the Prius for the winter months.

 

My wife has a honda accord hybrid.

45 mpg easy is so crazy to see

 

+1. Getting average 55mpg and commuting in a vehicle you don't care about & requires minimal maintenance is dreamy.

 

When it went from the 90's to the 70's my milage went up. Guess it was because the a/c wasn't on for a few days

 

It's not about money, just that there's a lot of things in life to care about, whether I get 18mpg or 21mpg with my Tacoma isn't one of them.

Like most guys I do pay attention to my cars, just not so much what fuel mileage they get.

I'm not sure how anyone could not notice a 3-4 MPG drop in fuel economy. It's not a matter of whether or not you care (although you should). It's just a matter of being aware of what's going on with your vehicle.

It's really not hard. It's basic math. I usually figure it out in my head while I'm driving.

A richer fuel mixture allows the engine to start and run properly when cold. In a cold engine gasoline doesn't vaporize well and tends to condense on cold engine parts. Cold weather prolongs the process, it simply takes more time for the engine to reach operating temperature where it runs most efficiently.

Same reason carbureted engines have a choke for cold starting and many older EFI engines have an extra cold start injector.

I need to make a mileage run in the Tacoma to see how it performs. Typically, in some of my other cars, I've seen the best mileage on a cool crisp November morning. The fuel says the same temperature from the initial fill up to the return trip fill up. I fill up at the same station and pump at the start and end of the test.

This matters less than the mpg dropping. Who fucking cares?

The drop in mileage matters when you are losing almost 100 miles of range and you fill up on mileage as you should be vs. what the gauge says.

 

Mine gets average 14.5 mpg.... Thats with my prinsu rack and RTT OFF... I dont think weather has anything to do with MPGs. Wind on the other hand.... The truck calibrates itself to get the best mpg regardless of outside temps

Everyone SHOULD. I do, and I'm willing to bet that the majority of the people on this site do.

Most people can't afford to have 2 cars. Besides, if I'm taking a road trip, I'm probably taking my 4runner. If I can save money on gas, I'm all for it.

 

I don'y worry about MPG. If i was worried about MPG I would have bought something else.

It does make me wonder how stretched people are when they start getting upset about an MPG drop. We're now in the tenth year of cheap money and it won't end well.

 

What fuel efficient option do you know of that's capable of what a Tacoma or 4runner can do?

I accept that my 4runner will never get great mileage. That doesn't mean I won't do what I can to get the most out of it.

The whole "if you're worried about fuel economy, buy a Prius" argument is lame. Why would anyone want to spend more on fuel than necessary?

I'm not bitching about the lower fuel economy. I'm just discussing it.

If we as a community act like we don't give a shit about fuel economy, it sounds like we don't give a shit about the environment. That's not a good look.
