Fired the truck up this morning ~24F and I thought I heard the power steering whine when turning the wheels. Drove to work and everything seems normal. After work, ~28F, got in the truck and still had the whine when moving the steering wheel. So I popped the hood and sure enough the power steering reservoir ~1" to 2" below the cold low mark or could barley see any fluid in the reservoir. No biggie, bought some ATF fluid as called out in our manual and filled it to the correct cold low/hi mark. Whine went away and again truck drove normal.

Has anyone had a issue with steering fluid leaks or any ideas how the steering fluid got so low? No, I have not noticed any marks under the truck. I will pay closer attention to this.

    Cheers,

    Dave

Hmm, I have to outside to look. Is this something obvious to see or do I to remove TRD skid? I assume this is down towards the front the truck?

You shouldn't need to drop the skid.... the boots for the inner tie rods.

Just on the inside of the wheels is a boot. Follow that shaft to the other boot. That's the inner CV joint.

It's quite normal for hose clamps to loosen over time in extreme conditions.... Check them. Watch for drips on the snow.

If it is leaking at the tie rods, this is what you’d be looking for.

Yep, you’ve got a leaky rack and pinion. The fix is to replace it. If you’re still under warranty, take it in

I am 46k, so no warranty...

What would cause this and how much is the fix? Thank you,

I thought it was 60k powertrain warranty?

Would that be considered powertrain? I'm guessing not...

Just some internal seals that went out. No idea what caused it to go out so early though.

I wouldn’t think so but it wouldn’t hurt to ask

750 for the rack from Camelback Toyota, approximately 400 for a shop to instal.
Just had to have mine done, warranty was denied at 30k
Mine wasn't leaking, but I had no power steering
