The only two vehicles I've driven that that definitely did not have ABS were a 1974 Ford F100 and a 1971 VW Bus. I've never driven a non-ABS vehicle in the snow or "emergency braked" in one. I've been told that ABS creates more problems than it solves.

You gave me something to think about, there was also a 1993 Cobra R which was a race version that happened to use the SN95 5 lug brakes before they came out so it is possible that they had ABS.

The first vehicle I owned with ABS was my 2000 Tacoma.

Does it make a real difference? I do not like the pulsating pedal that comes from mashing braking in the snow...

They feel different, you just have to adjust to it. Your natural reaction is to let up on the pedal when you start to slide but with ABS you have to keep your foot planted on the brake.

What about the brakes locking up in emergency situations? Pump it?

I know a guy from Carlisle who ripped the ABS out of his '05 off-road rig because it made things more difficult when off-roading and rock crawling...

I can see that happening for sure, I think the early versions of ABS were more intrusive.

My truck has way more than adequate braking performance for what it is (a 10-year old pickup truck with front disc/rear drum brakes).

A lot of YouTube people bitch and moan about Drums on the Tacoma but it honestly stops pretty decent.

I wanted to convert to disc brakes just to say I had a base model RC with disc brakes, but the kits uninstalled are obscenely expensive!

I did convert my Mustang over to the 93 Cobra R SN95 Cobra brakes I mentioned earlier, absolutely fantastic upgrade as it completely changed the way I can drive. I can wait much longer to shrug off speed when approaching sharp turns, with the original disc/drum brakes I could never pull that off.

    How much did you spend?

Regardless of cost, in a performance/muscle car I can understand converting the brakes. Numerous people I have told me that there's no point in a 4-banger pickup truck that isn't used for towing.

Right, I honestly don't see the need in a daily driver pickup. I really cant remember what I spent back then because I did the suspension, brakes, wheels and tires, and SFC's all at the same time. I did buy brand new parts at that time however almost everything was available from the junkyard at much reduced prices. Over the years I have snatched up a few of those pieces and stashed away in case I ever need them as today they are a little harder to come by.

Also, why not keep your A/C R-12? I'll bet it was finger-numbingly cold when you bought the car!
