Sport grill color doesn't match body

I've got a radiant red TRD sport. Lately I've noticed that the grill seems to be a slightly darker shade of red than the hood which stands out whenever I look at the truck from the front. Has anyone else noticed this on their sport? I would imagine this is more noticeable on lighter colors. I'm thinking about bugging the dealer about it.

 

U know I sometimes notice the same thing on my silver Tacoma sport. I think its normal cause its paint painted over plastic I think, whereas the hood is painted over metal....just my thoughts.

 

I just looked out my front door at mine- and saw the same thing from far away (18-20 feet).
Walking up closer it changed just a bit...and right next to it-It is right on.

I think it's a combo of the way the paint glosses on the plastic and the difference of the lines between the grill (straight on) versus the hood (shallow angle)

 

this is true. if you paint everything the same time.it will still be a different color.paint dries different on palstics and metal

 

it has nothing to do with the material they paint over.

it is because they paint the body of the truck and the parts at different times possibly diff batches of paint even sometimes diff locations. u can see this on a lot of cars especially pearl colors were it is a lot harder to match.

 

At least I'm not the only one! I seem to notice it more on cloudy days too... I also attributed it to the viewing angle in low/medium light.

 

no wonder the employees at dealerships dont want to help us sometimes..they get people complaining about their grill colors not matching the truck color haha

 

that is true too but i have been an autobody painter for 17 years and the material you paint makes a difference. metal,plastic and rubber bumpers have different reactions to paint.

 

So my Uncle-in-law has been a body shop painter for close to 25yrs and he was telling me that the reason the paint is chipping on the tacomas so easily could be due to the change in going to a water based paint/primer (can't remember which one) Have you heard the same? all due to environment. He thinks your going to start seeing a lot of this on new cars.

 

there was a local body shop a couple of years ago working 20 hour days to fix about 2 million dollars in repaints from water based paint. sherman williams was the paint company and they paid for all of it. only a matter of time before its all water based. we only have 1 planet so we have to make it last.

 

what do u spray? im a ppg certified painter myself. i lay a coat of dp sealer on everything first i never have those kinda problems.

 

its not water based paints.thats a misconception. water based paints like what u use in your house disolve in water. they are water borne, wich are still solvent based but with 80% less voc's water is the carrier. when u spray them u only use 20% thinner as a posed to some traditional auto paints wich are around 1 part to 1 part. the finish is excelent with water borne

 

So what explains the fact that the paint on the tacomas chips soooo easily? I have never run into such a week paintjob before? Is it the type of primer they use?

 

My silver surround doesn't match perfectly either.
I may go for the chrome surround.I just changed outr my rear painted bumper to a chrome bumper.I like the look of the chrome more.

 

+1- I have 4500 miles and 7-8 chips on the hood. Further...Is this a known issue I can talk to my dealer about??

 

to me it seems like a very thin clear coat. but its not just toyota, the past few years i have had a 05 f150 an 04 gto and a 04 dodge ram. they all are the same way. it is just the manufactures getting cheap. believe it or not a paint job u get from an auto body shop is better then the factory which some people think the oposite.

 

glad I have a body shop guy in the family just washed my truck today and it looks like it got hit by buckshot.
