Anything welding

Welded up a couple sets of blocks today.

 

MillerMatic 215, 60S .035 wire, TriMix gas.

Can't even tell you my settings. I never look.

 

Why Tri-Mix you need to do Spray at times??

Was all you could get when you swapped cylinders ??

I had that happen a few times over the years.

 

Exactly. LWS was out of the large cans and gave me the trimix as a sub.

Upon initial test, it needs a bigger exhaust. Nothing a bigger pipe/tube can't fix. For now it work as expected.

 

Isn't it great working with metal?

Don't have to run after more lumber because it didn't work out the 1st time.

 

A couple pieces of fire brick on the bottom will keep the bottom from sagging when it gets real hot.

 

I'll try it. Plus the plate is no then thickest either.

 

What do you guys recommend for PPE for flux core welding? I'm thinking about picking up a cheap Harbor Freight Flux 125 and an Antra auto darkening welding helmet so I can learn. I have leather wildland fire gloves, but I'm wondering what else I should have to protect from slag with the flux core.

 

Ear plugs and safety glasses !!

A old 100% cotton sweat shirt stay away from synthetic clothing and foot wear that is not 100% leather

I am not sure about your gloves are they flexible enough to allow your fingers to move as needed.

 

I second the safety glasses. I always wear them when welding, even after I moved away from flux core. Getting some Rusty metal scraped off your eye changes your view on things.

 

Yeah they're pretty flexible, not super thick. They're just leather but they have a cuff that goes up your forearm about halfway.

 

So you're saying I should wear the safety glasses under the welders helmet too, or just when I'm cleaning up the welds afterwards? Thanks

 

I wear them under the helmet. They also help if you accidentally flash yourself because even the clear ones block the UV rays. You may be seeing spots but you won’t harm your eyes near as much.
