I was absolutely irate after a few days of ownership and 1000 miles on my 3rd gen when the howl started. I called the dealer and demanded my 2nd gen back that I traded for the howling 3rd gen.

“Nope, sorry, we can’t do that”. I was so f’n pissed. Still am f’n pissed. I Lost thousands of $$ when I traded it after 3 months of ownership because it howled so bad. I think I documented about 40 hours of phone calls with corporate (including hold time). Unreal.

hope they get it fixed. If they do, I’ll buy another one.

Mine bugs the hell out of me every trip into work. It is a light hilly road with 55 mph speed limit the whole way. Howl, fine, howl some more. The problem is I don't wan't any other vehicles other than a gladiator and I don't really love it after driving a couple.

I would prefer to be back in another old toyota, but used trucks are too expensive for what you get these days

The wife, who never notices any out-of-place sounds in our vehicles, in fact gets highly upset with me when she notices me listening to some "ghost sounds", her words, while driving, always comments while in the Tacoma,"What's that noise? Why don't you get that fixed?" To which I reply, "Hearing ghosts, eh?"
For me, I don't notice it anymore, unless the boss brings it up.

I just get to somehow get a 4th repair attempt in since I am in Indiana. Too bad they are saying they won't touch it again. Does anyone have any tips for that?

Accept the noise as a quirk of the truck, or trade the truck in, those are really your choices.

This is a design related issue, so dealer techs aren't going to be able to make the noise go away by simply replacing parts willy nilly.

All of you with the howl— please take your trucks to your dealer and complain (even though there’s nothing they can do about this “feature” that many Tacoma’s share). Get it documented. Call corporate and open a case (which they will promptly want to close).

Toyota needs to fix this and maybe they eventually will if enough people complain. Maybe it’s a numbers game? We can hope.

I’d love to get back into a Tacoma. It’s a great truck. But I won’t do it until this issue is resolved. It’s not ok to do this to people spending $40k on a vehicle. I lost thousands on my trade after a very short time because I couldn’t handle the sound. Felt like I got robbed.

Got 32 inch Falken Wildpeaks mounted today.

Haven't noticed the diff howl since the tires were put on. Not sure if the tires hum at a different frequency that helps cancel it out, or if perhaps there's just enough difference with the tire size to affect forces being applied. Very odd. Have some highway driving to do tomorrow, I'll update if/when anything changes.

If you take it in for a problem, document it, and they refuse to work on it, then that counts as a failed attempt. Steve Lehto wrote a good article about this. You can either take it to a dealer that hasn’t worked on it or simply go back to your old dealer, have them write a ticket documenting your complaint, take pics of you being there, and move on. Refusal to repair is a failed attempt. GM tried that crap on me (wouldn’t give an paperwork) so I pulled it into the service area, took pics of everyone, and told them to all get bent and moved on. GM later bought back my Yukon XL when I told them that was their last attempt. If manufacturers simply won’t authorize the repair and dealers turn you away, then no one could ever Lemon law a car because they’d just cut you off at whatever visit is required.

My 2017 DC off-road long bed used to him around 50ish mph. They replaced the leaf springs on it and it was quiet after that.

My ears cannot accept the noise, covering it up won't fix it, and my wallet doesn't want to get screwed by some engineer that decided the specs on the rear end were "Good enough" and that gear whine is a feature.

I mean.... It's really not that loud.
    Annoying? Sure.
    Should it be there? No.
Is it blowing up diffs?... Also no.

I would agree with you, except that in my case it really is that loud. If you have the radio at a normal comfortable listening level you can still hear it. If you are listening to a podcast or just having a conversation it is obnoxious. You really have to crank it to not hear/feel it.

if your looking for a vehicle that doesn't have any quirks and fits your idea of what should and shouldn't be reality you'll never find it. you can play with threats and lawyers all you want the worlds not going to change because of you and what you perceive as being wronged.

It varies from truck to truck. Yours might not be that bad but mine would run you out of the truck for my first diff. The second one was heading that direction as well, but at multiple speeds as opposed to one fixed range.

I’d disagree. I just bought my 31st new vehicle and have had plenty that have never seen the shop other than routine maintenance. Also, I don’t have to play with lawyers - I am one. I also don’t threat, I make statements that I’m willing to follow through on - there’s a difference. So, we should all be an ostrich and bury our head in the sand and trust corporate? Ok. Peace and be well.

Dang.... I'd deff open a case complaint then. Mine got a lot quieter with new (and slightly bigger) tires, but it's still there.

more to life than just chasing around perceived issues with cars, lots of people just move forward with their lives when they have bad experiences with all kinds of things, living in the past will eat you alive move forward and enjoy what time you have to live on this planet.

Just for reference, I had the OR with premium sound and Kickers up front. Mine could be heard over my radio tuned at volume level 35.
