My insurance deductible is $250 I'm sure it will cost over $1000 to fix this at a body shop. Can I just get the check for whatever the estimate is and just buy an aftermarket bumper?

Probably closer to $1200. Had to replace mine a year ago for the same reason. Check with your insurance carrier about the aftermarket bumper. I thought about it, but I didn’t think my little 4 cyl needed to carry anymore weight than it had to.

Take the insurance money and invest in an aluminum bumper. You may have to dish out a tad more for the cost of aluminum but you will save in having to spend for the suspension requirements of a heavier steel bumper.

I guess my question is how to get the money from the insurance company instead of having it fixed.

Just get the estimate and ask them to write you the check. It's pretty straightforward

Usually they will allow you to take it to your chosen body shop for an estimate, then they will cut you the check.

    Easy Peasy:

Get a couple of estimates from a few body shops. Send in the highest one to the insurance company. They send a check to you directly. Cash check and order the bumper of your choice.

Yes, if the truck is paid for and you have the title.Sometimes its better not to make a small claim like yours, your insurance could go up !
