Rear Diff oil brand/type? Help!

Hey guys I have never change my Rear Diff oil on my 2008 tacoma v6 prerunner base 2wd. I was wondering what weight and brand of rear diff oil is the best? Also I looked in my owners manual and it says SAE 90 for the rear diff fluid. I tried looking and am not sure what oil to buy. Also I'm not sure if my tacoma has limited slip. I looked on the rear diff and did not see anything. Can anybody help?

Stock gears use what they say 75/90 thats what most will recommend and dealer. Lucas is solid. A bunch of people use Mobil1. You will need an additive if you have limited slip but I believe that is only the sport model. Someone will respond but the manual should tell you.

 

Jack up rear and spin one tire by hand. If the other tire rotation is opposite you have an open diff and require no additive.
Go to Walmart and by the cheapest dinosaur oil close to 90 weight (more won’t hurt) and change it every 30k miles. No benefits from synthetic oils whatsoever unless you like pissing away money. Cue the Amsoil crowd. Lol!

 

You will need 75wt/90. If that isn't available you can use 80wt/90. Your truck does not have a lsd so you will not need the additives for one.

I am a cheap bastard and run supertech (Walmart) oil in my rear diff. The front and transfer case gets redline as they dont call for a change as often. Truck has been happy with this for 40,000 miles and counting.

 

Only the 05 - 07 Sports since they had a true mechanical limited slip, the 08+ Sports have a pretend one

Any brand gear oil is fine but I would stay away from synthetic gear oil for the diffs...East Coast Gear Supply recommends not putting synth in them anyway. Something about it not withstanding heat as well as regular if I recall. It's on their website

I run 85/140 also. Only reason they put the thinner stuff in factory is probably fuel economy

 

Thanks. I think I need to buy 4 quarts of the stuff. Also what about the washers? I seen an thread on here and someone mentioned the metal washers are on Amazon. Can someone link them please? Does the metal washers need to be replaced on both plugs? Thanks again guys. Also I've owned the truck since new and have never changed the rear diff oil. The truck currently has about 160k.

 

What are some non-synthetic gears oils to look at? It seems like everything sold online is synthetic.

 

I used these for my 07 w/MT. More than enough for changing all the gear oil. Front diff, Transmission, T/case and rear diff. There were a few left over. Some are crush type. Others are flat/solid. I used Supertech 75/90 in everything but would use something different in the transmission if I did it again.

Thanks! What is the difference in the 75w/90 that most people seem to recommend and the 85wt/140 lucas oil?

75/90 in whatever brand makes you feel good. Done. Don’t overthink this.

The 85/140 is a heavier oil. Heavier than recommended but I wouldn't hesitate to use it if you think you need extra protection ie. severe service, heavy towing, or any uses that may shock the gears more than normal. May decrease your mileage but probably insignificanty.

 

I've been looking at the mobil 1 but the ones that I have found are the: mobil delvac 1 and mobil 1 LS (I assume thats limited slip, which I'm not sure I'll need). Lucas is another brand I'm looking at.

The mobil1 “LS” will work fine in your truck. That is what I (and many, many others) use (I’ve used lucas, Valvoline, etc. in other vehicles as well.)
