I agree with you. This is why I no longer own the truck. I didn’t LL it because my FIL, a retired Navy Officer that we moved down to help (along with my MIL) with his health issues, started having complications from Parkinson’s. He said he was too tired to get out of bed on his birthday on July 4th. He never got out of bed again and died a month later. I sold the truck 2 days after we buried him to free up time and to help my MIL get through this. That truck was the least of my worries. Take care!

Given that a rear end howl is extremely slow to kill you (I would argue extremely unlikely as well), worrying about nonsense could still be very, very slow to kill you and still be faster to kill you than a rear end howl.

I'm not convinced that I need to stop worrying about nonsense based on your statement.

I am not sure where I am at volume wise, but it probably isn't far off from moon dog. This definitely isn't living in the the past. Is annoying everyday. And I am not worried about quirks....I don't bitch about my old Toyotas having wind noise and getting shitty mpg and not having any power. Those are old trucks, I knew what I was getting when I bought them. My F100 is slow and noisy too.

This truck was A'ok on the test drive. Heck, it was good for at least a couple of months. The transmission and motor in this truck aren't as bad as everyone says, but this harmonic is a deal breaker. I wouldn't have bought it if it was there on the test drive of any of the 4 trucks I drove before purchasing this one.

Mine was quiet for the first 1100 miles. My second one was quiet for about 1500 miles.

I also didn’t mention that my door seal areas were rusted out on my 17 (I don’t view that as minor) and I live in an area that is not prone to rust. Mine was riddled with issues that are not worth mentioning now and it was by far the worst truck I’ve owned to date. I guess I just got a bad one, but my wife (who doesn’t hear well) refused to ride in that truck because the howl was so loud and was at a frequency that was deafening to her. Like many others, I didn’t sign up for that. If Toyota put a huge disclaimer on the sticker I wonder how many would still buy? I’d bet not as many.

I would just like to see them fix the nagging issues because I like the look and feel of the truck, but I won’t be in one again until they get the issues worked out. Like many on here this is not my first Taco but I haven’t had a rear differential whine since my dad’s old 60s Chevy truck (which the rear differential seized up while I was driving it - fun fun). I did have a 15 Yukon that had a slight howl at 55, but it sounded more like tire noise.

    Best of luck to everyone.

nada....maybe a license plate one day & BA bumpers
I dealt with this last winter (I do have a gen2, but its all the same in this regard)
heard the howl, swapped the rear diff for a ECGS rebuilt at 295k miles,
drove 10k miles with no howl & then started to hear the howl again (but could not make it sing)
at 315k miles I was able to make it sing again
I am nearing 345k atm, & the howl is very noticable again
Im going for 500k on my taco....so I plan to just drive it & F the howl (its just normal for the truck)
as the pinion race (inside the rear diff) gets worn in, it makes this noise....its normal & fine

'sing'- get to the speed where howl is most evident (for me its exactly 60mph) & barely tap the gas in half second pulses
do this 10-15 times (tap, release, tap, release....) you will hear the howl BAD
great way to demo the noise to someone who doubts or cant hear fine noises or at the dealer/service dept

here is my thread on the matter-

quirks are not too big a deal as long as they get repaired. its when you spend your hard earned money on a new truck and have quirks that someone won't repair. that would piss me off and i'd push until fixed. lucky for me the replaced my springs and the noise went away.. manufactures love customers that are ignorant to the quirks and don't care if its right or not..

having a quirks you don't like doesn't mean theres an mechanical issue its just something you don't like, like theres a lot of quirks you get when you get married and have kids but you voluntarily do it and have to take the good with the bad theres no warranty that covers >I don't like

I’m curious, does your truck have the rear end howl?

well first off I have a lot of friends and co workers that own the 3rd gen and they have had zero issues or even know about these issues that are constantly being thrown around here as big problems, so i'll leave you to drown in your tears instead of enjoying your truck.

So why are you commenting? People on here do have the noise and are commiserating. You telling us that it’s fine and to ignore it is annoying.

Me complaining about my rear end howl does not take anything away from your nice truck so stop taking it personally.

Using Chiloquin_Car_Care's method, I was able to reproduce the sound from 60 down to 45 and again at 30. The sound at 30 has been there since my 2nd diff, but I was never able to reproduce it for the tech. Then again he couldn't hear it at 55. I know not all sound sources are the same level, but I can hear it over Smells like Teen spirit at 38 with the premium sound system.

so the only ones allowed to comment here are people who want to bitch about something that's been rung out for 3 years now that's considered by the experts as a normal aspect of the truck, as I've said before and am allowed to say is I know many people who have 3rd gen trucks and absolutely love them and don't have any issues as have been gone thru in many different threads. so theres also another side to every story don't have to be a bitch fest 24/7 because the 3rd gen outsells all mid size competitors, many are buying them regardless of what Twinkie the Kid says.
