Yeah I'm curious what happens if one side has a little more drag than the other when unloaded. I would think one side would spin a bunch and the other not, which would be bad.

Manual hubs are nice. My old Chevy started with one of the godawful thermal actuators (wtf gm?!), then a previous owner upgraded it to a proper linear actuator, but did a horrible job with the wiring. It was not enjoyable to deal with. 100% mechanical 4wd is so much less headache, but does require a little thinking ahead.

I would like to have manual hubs...knowing the system is entirely mechanical would give me peace of mind over relying on an electrical system that is starting to show it's age on an older truck like mine. No problems with mine yet though *knock on wood*

The only thing about the manual hubs I hear is a disadvantage (at least on 1st gen Tacomas) is that the manual hub CV axles are slightly smaller and therefore weaker, but the upside is the boots probably last a whole lot longer since they aren't constantly spinning.

I have 4 wheel drive in case I need it, not to use it daily or shit even monthly. I got stuck on a boat ramp ONE time and stuck on the beach ONE time without it and never again. I find it hard to believe that I need to lubricate the system every month for 10 miles, BUT I bet the mothership Toyo. corporate likes any verbiage in the manual that MIGHT save a warranty claim.

Max speed to engage 4hi is 55-60mph

Once you're in 4hi you can go as fast as your truck is capable of going, but chances are if you need to be in 4hi then you probably shouldn't be going that fast for the conditions you're in

Nice picture, reinforces what I said. 2wd --> 4hi keep speed below 60mph.

Agreed. A lot of people give bad info on here about 4wd,when to engage etc.

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.

Go find trails and take it offroad every month. Problem solved.

I often drive in patches of snow and ice in winter conditions. When I see and sense it might be slick in spots, it goes in 4 Hi. It’s designed to be driven like this. Straight, curves, turns, 5 miles, or 20 miles. I select it, and then I just drive it. If I notice improved conditions I turn it off. Never notice binding or problems. Tacoma 4 Hi is not at all a traditional 4 WD system. It’s designed for novice drivers to use. I wouldn’t worry about using it to be safe.
