Hey guys, let me give you a few pieces of info right quick and tell me what you think about me going ahead with my first oil change on my 2010 2.7L AT base model 2WD:

    - Truck was built back in May
    - Sat on dealer lot until I bought it July 12 (11 miles on odometer)
    - I will reach 1500 miles on it by this weekend
    - My truck was shipped from the factory with a syn blend (confirmed)
    - I am going with Mobil 1 full synthetic 0W-20 or 5W-20

Do you think this is too soon? My reasoning in doing it now was mostly the fact that that oil has been inside the engine since May. I probably won't even put 10,000 miles per year on this truck so my plan is to just change out the mobil 1 every 6 months. Planning on using the stock Toyota filter unless anyone thinks that's a mistake.

    TIA,
    Eric

Talk to your dealer and ask them about the 'break-in' period.

The manaul doesn't say anything about changing the oil too soon, so you're probably fine. I changed mine at 2500 miles.

No big deal with the oil sitting in the engine. It has been decent weather, not temp. changes such as winter brings.

What grade does your owners manual recommend?
Are you trying to outguess the factory as to what you should be using?

Nothing wrong with a Toyota filter. You just spent probably $25K + on the truck. You want to protect the warranty.
With your mileage expected, you'll use two filters. The Toyota cost won't break you.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
I'm not an expert, but at this point I think it is an unnecessary expense.

not sure if this is correct but the service mgr where i bought my taco said to wait 6months or 5000 mi before first oil change, something about special oil for "break in" period.

I have the same truck. I changed my oil at 1700 miles for Mobil 1 synthetic 0W-20.

Gotta agree. Why waste your money?
Go by the owner's manual which probably says 5k for first oil change.
These are not high stressed engines.

Called the service dept. today and the guy said they have people come in for the first oil change anywhere from 500 to 5000 miles depending on what the customer wants to do. He said that they encourage the use of mobil 1 in the weights I pulled from the manual and listed in my op. He said that in his opinion, 1500 miles-2500 miles would be a great time to get the factory oil out and start the mobil 1 if I was planning on keeping the truck long term as I had mentioned to him. though he did not push it and did state that the 5000 miles was the warranty requirement though subject to opinion whether that was actually best or not. He claimed he switched his own at 2000 miles.

He was aware as was I, that I had the 2 year free maintenance plan that came with my truck and that all I had to do was bring my own mobil 1 with me which would be a cheaper alternative than using theirs. Personally he gained a lot of my respect shooting straight and not trying to gouge me like he could have. He recommended the Toyota filter since they have had zero problems and mine are free for 2 years.

So FWIW, that's what they had to say. He was very pleasant and patient with my questions which I was appreciative.

I also told him I didin't want my pedal cut, or the "free" car wash as I'm not a fan of either and his reply was " don't worry, we'll take good care of you and your truck". So we'll see how it goes.

I gotta feelin' my new stearns & foster mattress has much more to do with how I'm sleeping (better than ever thanks) then when I get one of our vehicles oil changed. Don't really see the correlation between oil changes and sleep? If anything I'm sleeping too good and the truck just sits in the garage. Rest assured, no sleep lost here. :D

Thanks guys for all the help!

Sometimes I wonder if people read before they answer. I thought I had a pretty straightforward question. Can't belive it was the dumbest question ever asked on here. Infact I know it wasn't. I do appreciate the help of those that were trying to help and if I mistake anyones help for smartassedness, I apologize in advance. :D

What are you basing that advice on? There are lots of people who would disagree (if not most that understand engines) that the 5k for the first change that Toyota recommends is too far. I realize and don't disagree with someone who says that's all that's required for warranty, but that don't make it right.

My owners manual doesn't say I have to wash the truck every week and wax it every month for warranty, but I do because common sense and past experience tells me if I want it to look good long term and I am able to do so, I'm just protecting my investment. Plus I enjoy it..

I mean to be honest, if I wasn't keeping this thing long term i'd do the cheapest thing I had to do to meet warranty, but that's not the situation.

I like the idea of using the mobil1 for 2 main reasons:

    1) I buy into the claims that most engine wear happens on startup and I truly think the mobil1 makes a diff there from everything i've read.

    2) It will allow me to do 2 oil changes per year (every 6 months) as I will go at or under 10k per year on this truck. I could do just 1, but the 6 months is a compromise of the extremes I've read from netsperts..

    speedythecat,
If you are really concerned and want some valid information instead of opinions, send a sample of your oil off and have it analyzed at a place like Blackstone Labs.
    http://www.blackstone-labs.com/
I'm not going to tell you my results of the oil analysis since it would not mean anything for your truck and oil.
