    Using CarPlay

Right now I just ran the USB that came with the unit around back and plugged my lightening cable to it. CarPlay works fine here. I get "device not recognized" when trying to use the adapter and go through the stock USB port with the aux above it.

That is so strange that mine works with the factory USB outlet and yours doesn't...I have a 2018 SR5 double cab, so I would think its the exact same thing.

I haven't checked to see if I needed to update the firmware. Could that be it?

I don't know...Mine worked with carplay before updating firmware. I do remember hearing that longer aftermarket lightning cables could have a problem...

The one I have is the one that came in the box for my iPhone 10X. Idk.

I'll probably just grab this and replace the USB/Aux Port.

I'm looking to do something similar... I want to get rid of the unnused aux port though. I'm no expert on USB compatibility, but the ILX-W650 only supports up to USB 2.0, so I'm not sure what would happen with a USB 3.0 extension.

I just got myself the iLX-W650 package, w/ amp, and all the fixins from Crutchfield. Using Android Auto because superior, duh. Also, had to try the firmware update and it wouldn't take from my Kingston 32GB flash drive, so in spectacular CF fashion they sent me one pre-loaded free. I'll give it a shot tonight or later in the week/weekend. It should get me more features enabled and hopefully the adapter to the factory USB lets the OEM port work. Installed as: Alpine USB cable - Crux harness adapter USB - OEM USB cable to the port in front of the shifter.
I installed it once and then went through a couple hours of troubleshooting why things didn't work over the course of 2 days. Shitty Honda ricer recommended quick connectors from Vatozone  2 calls, 2 days, and a few hours later just to figure that one out!
Strip n crimp folks! Or solder.

The USB thing really doesn't bug me that much, since I use phone/music via Bluetooth, except it's needed for the AA.

To add; running Memphis Audio's PRX690C kit and it's like night n day from the basic oem HU. The HU alone was likely enough, should've got one 3 years ago when I did the speaker upgrade.

I’ll be sending mine back. Did the firmware update, no luck. Took it to a CarToys because I’m still having issues (“device is not supported” showing more often than not and CarPlay not working). They essentially reinstalled it to check my work, and I’m still getting the same issue. Defeats the purpose of having the unit if I can only get CarPlay to come up every so often.

That is so odd to me. I have no idea why this would happen...

If the problem is when you use the car's existing USB port and it works on a USB extension cable I don't think the problem is the deck. It would more likely be the adapter cable or the plug in the car. I believe you mentioned before that it works with a simple extension cable.

It has never recognized my device and worked with CarPlay when using the USB adapter and factory USB outlet.

The intermittent issues are with the USB extension cable that came with a unit and the Apple lightening cable that came with my iPhone 10x.

I wasn’t able to get CarPlay to work at all today.

I've had mine installed for a few months now without any issues. The backup camera functions the same as OEM, so that is great. I also installed the bypass, and yes I can access all of the features while driving.

My 2002 doesn't have an OEM camera, can I still install one aftermarket?

This HU will work and meet the budget, without the amp. If you aren't wanting to boost the audio a huge amount, you'll be fine.
Get in touch with Crutchfield and they'll hook you up with install tools, materials, and the gear and knowledge for it. I can't recommend them enough! Incredibly helpful for myself.

I have a 2002 Tacoma. Do I have to buy any mounting hardware or trim pieces? Can I use it with my iPhone on WAZE? If I buy the bypass, can I use all the functions while driving?

Apple CarPlay can’t be used wirelessly with this head unit?

When I installed, CF said that they're working on firmware to get this to happen. That was a month or so back.
